Black Desert Resort

Desert luxury surrounded by lava fields and red cliffs
VERIFIED LUXURY
Southern Utah has no shortage of postcard-worthy moments, but Black Desert Resort places guests in the middle of one of the region's most dramatic landscapes. Built on more than 600 acres amid ancient black lava flows with striking red cliffs rising in the distance, the property is a polished home base for exploring Greater Zion while delivering a luxury resort experience all its own.

The contemporary 580-room retreat includes outdoor recreation (pickleball, hiking and rappelling), wellness programming (meditation, stretching and grounding classes) and destination dining (seven restaurants and bars). It’s a prime place for golfers planning a bucket-list trip, families seeking a desert getaway or relaxation-seeking adventurers looking to spend several days discovering nearby natural attractions.

Golf hub St. George sits about 15 minutes away, while Las Vegas is an easy 90-minute drive, making the resort surprisingly convenient despite its remote setting.

Our Inspector's Highlights

  • Golf is the defining attraction, thanks to Tom Weiskopf's final course design. Consistently ranked among Utah's top public layouts, the 19-hole course winds through ancient lava rock with crimson cliffs framing many holes, while an expansive driving range and 36-hole putting course give guests plenty of opportunities to sharpen their game.
  • When it comes to accommodations, guests can choose from distinct collections tailored to different travel styles. Options include guest rooms near the resort's restaurants and gathering spaces, wellness-focused rooms adjacent to the spa, residential-style studios and suites, and spacious golf residences with full kitchens overlooking the course.
  • Wellness receives equal attention at the 15,000-square-foot Plume Spa & Wellness. Treatments are complemented by yoga, Pilates, sound baths and a modern fitness center, while select guest rooms extend the experience with circadian lighting, infrared therapy blankets, aromatherapy and other restorative touches.
  • The surrounding landscape remains one of the luxury resort's greatest assets. Black lava fields stretch across the property while the colorful cliffs of Snow Canyon provide a dramatic backdrop for the pools, outdoor gathering spaces, walking paths and many of its guest rooms.
  • Basalt serves as the resort's signature restaurant, showcasing regional ingredients through prime-aged beef, sustainable seafood, Utah cheeses and seasonal produce alongside an extensive wine list and sweeping desert vistas.

The Restaurants

  • Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, Latitude serves Baja California cuisine. Enjoy dishes like birria tortas and wood-fired red snapper with a dry chili marinade while overlooking the 19th green and waterfalls.
  • The 20th Hole blends sports bar euphoria with golf culture inside a lively space featuring oversized televisions, golf simulators, classic American fare and indulgent milkshakes. It’s 14,000 square feet, so there’s plenty of room to spread out.
  • Club 73 is one of the property’s most relaxed options. An open-air setting, burgers and live music make it an easy choice for a casual meal after a round. The spot has a breakfast menu, too.
  • Enjoy a rooftop perch and a Southwestern taqueria-inspired menu at Oasis. Cool off with dirty sodas (a Utah favorite that mixes soda with flavored syrups, cream and more), beers on tap or Dole Whip.
  • Lobby bar Flo updates cocktail classics, like the Dusty Trail Sidecar with brandy, amaro nonino, lemon, simple syrup and egg white, and Crimson Canyon Flip, featuring bourbon, Campari, sweet vermouth and egg white.
