Waldorf Astoria Shanghai on the Bund
Classic meets contemporary on the Bund
VERIFIED LUXURY
Here are five things to know about us:
1. We verify luxury. Our highly trained inspectors visit every property we rate, evaluating based on up to 900 objective criteria. Our hotel stays span a minimum of two nights.
2. We pay our own way. No one can buy a rating; all ratings are earned through our objective inspection process.
3. Our global team of inspectors are anonymous at all times, so they have the same experience as a typical guest.
4. While we inspect both service and facility, our Star Rating system emphasizes service because your experience at a hotel, restaurant or spa goes beyond looks — how it makes you feel is what you will remember most.
5. We started in1958 as Mobil Travel Guide, and we created the original Five-Star rating system for hospitality.
Five-Star
These properties deliver an outstanding experience and consistently offer a highly customized level of service.
Four-Star
These are exceptional properties, offering high levels of service and quality of facility to match.
Recommended
These are excellent properties with consistently good service and facilities.
Soon To Be Rated
As our highly trained, incognito inspectors work to assess properties, our editors check them out ahead of time and provide a sneak preview of what to expect.
Like the city itself, Waldorf Astoria Shanghai on the Bund is split in two: There’s the more than 100-year-old historic part of the building and the new modern tower.
The rooms similarly meld old and new with old-fashioned glass candy jars that hold house-made treats like balls of white chocolate-covered Krispies, while the marble bathrooms come with televisions built into the mirrors and electronic Toto toilets loaded with buttons.
Can’t get enough of those complimentary in-room sweets? Pick up more in the tempting daily spread in Peacock Alley. Don’t spoil your dinner though — Pelham’s French fare and Wei Jing Ge’s regional Chinese cuisine make the hotel a fine-dining destination.

Our Inspector's Highlights
- The Shanghai hotel is made up of two buildings, one of which is a lovingly restored 101-year-old historic structure on the Bund. In this Heritage Building, you will find restored details like crown moldings and wainscoting.
- As its name says, Waldorf Astoria Shanghai is right on the Bund, a street that hugs the curve of the Huangpu River and is home to Shanghai’s richest collection of historical architecture, including neoclassical, colonial and Art Deco buildings.
- Shanghai offers an array of world-class restaurants, but you don’t need to leave the hotel to find a great bite. Pelham’s serves up nouveau American cuisine while Wei Jing Ge gives you a taste of traditional Cantonese, Shanghainese and Huai Yang dishes.
- Listen to live classical music as you sip tea or coffee and sample finger sandwiches, sweet and savory pastries and supremely buttery scones during the Waldorf Astoria’s luxurious afternoon tea service.
- The hotel’s engineering team has thought of everything. In each room you’ll find digital controls for the drapes, lighting, room temperature and more, along with an energy-saving system that automatically adjusts the lights and temperature when you leave the room.
Things to Know
- The 20 suites in the hotel’s 101-year-old Heritage Building have hosted guests like the crown princes of Luxembourg and Belgium.
- In addition to Wi-Fi throughout the hotel, each room has a Bluetooth keyboard so you can use the LCD television to surf the Internet.
- Step inside the Four-Star hotel, take a look at the marble floors, opulent chandeliers and enormous bouquets of flowers, and you’ll be stopped in your tracks. The hotel is beautifully decorated down to every last detail.
The Rooms
- In the historic building, which celebrated its 100th birthday in 2011, the 20 suites include restored detailing, such as crown moldings, wainscoting and mantels topped with glass and porcelain vases.
- The Heritage Building suites are truly luxe, with carved wooden cabinets, canopy beds, freestanding tubs and handmade chocolates and candies in delicate glass jars by the bed.
- In the new tower, the beautifully decorated rooms and suites feature fresh flowers, Art Deco-inspired light fixtures, dark wood desks, easy chairs in a paisley print and bathrooms done up in black-and-white marble.
- Plush beds are topped with four pillows in crisp white cases and two colorful bolsters which, along with the oil painting above the bed, are a treat for the eyes.
The Restaurants
- Peacock Alley is the ideal spot for a quick bite in the afternoon. Its menu includes items like salt-roasted beets with spiced lentils, flakey goat cheese beignet with tomato chutney and the Peacock Brioche (ham, Asiago cheese and black truffle seared in a light egg batter).
- At Pelham’s, tuck into pan-seared foie gras with almond pain perdu (French toast), macerated strawberries and aged balsamic, or a crusted fillet of grouper sided with cumin-scented lentils, roasted beetroot and green apple.
- For Chinese bites, Wei Jing Ge offers winter melon soup with fresh crab meat; braised sea cucumber with shrimp roe and bean curd; and sautéed sliced pork belly with XO sauce and okra.
- Grand Brasserie is the Shanghai hotel’s luxurious, white-columned all-day dining venue. The breakfast buffet offers an array of chef stations cooking up eggs Benedict, omelets and Belgian vanilla waffles.
