The Peninsula Shanghai

High glamour along the Bund
VERIFIED LUXURY
The Peninsula Shanghai's gorgeous Art Deco lobby outfitted in celadon green walls and black marble floors transports you back to Shanghai’s golden age. But the cerulean-and-white guest rooms are undeniably modern: With the push of a button, the tub is filled, drapes fly open and Internet radio streams through the speakers.

While the high-tech rooms are a standout, so are the Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star hotel’s restaurants: Sleek Sir Elly’s is one of the best fine-dining spots in the city, and the traditional Yi Long Court serves excellent Cantonese fare.

Though you can’t go to the hotel without stopping in The Peninsula Spa by ESPA. Its carved wood furniture and amenities like heated treatment floors are as luxurious as that golden era.

Our Inspector's Highlights
  • The service is impeccable from the moment you arrive at the Five-Star hotel until you check out. And don’t worry if your Chinese is limited to ni hao (“hello”): Everyone on the staff speaks English well and could not be more gracious or more readily available to help.
  • Whether you indulge in the Oriental Thermal Infusion to eliminate toxins or get your tired feet kneaded with some reflexology, you’ll leave the Five-Star Peninsula Spa by ESPA feeling refreshed.
  • The Peninsula Shanghai’s Western fine-dining restaurant, Sir Elly’s, is a go-to for visiting gourmands.
  • Though the Five-Star hotel caters heavily to business and luxury travelers, it warmly welcomes kids. The staff refers to kids as “junior guests” and gives them the same high level of service that adults receive.
  • The Peninsula’s spot directly on the Bund affords you easy access to tourist destinations and the city’s Financial District, as well as sweeping night views of the city’s futuristic-looking Pudong-side skyline.
Things to Know
  • Sir Elly’s terrace is one of the best alfresco dining spots in Shanghai, and we’ve seen it used as a spot for a romantic proposal as well.
  • The gym at The Peninsula Shanghai is almost always empty, leaving you with your pick of the brand-new equipment that’s in tip-top shape.
  • Rooms come packed with so much technology that the bellman will give you a quick lesson on how to use it all when you first enter the space.
The Rooms
  • The sumptuous beds offer a refreshing night’s sleep with a white fluffy comforter, plush pillows and a shimmery cerulean bolster with tan bordered ends sit on top.
  • You’ll want to play with the desk’s control panel, which has an iPhone dock and buttons to stream Internet radio and display the outdoor temperature, humidity, UV and wind information.
  • The centerpiece of the white-walled bedroom is the sprawling black entertainment unit that takes up almost the entire wall. Slide open the black vertical doors with carved gold birds on branches, butterflies and magnolias (the official city flower) to unveil a large flat-screen Samsung TV
  • The cream marble bathrooms provide ample space for primping, including his-and-hers sinks in the suites, oversized soaking tubs and separate glass-door shower.
The Restaurants
  • The Peninsula Shanghai’s signature fine-dining option, Sir Elly’s, offers Mediterranean-influenced dishes with sweeping views of the Pudong skyline and the Huangpu River.
  • Those wanting a taste of the local cuisine should pay a visit to Yi Long Court, which is helmed by noted chef Tang Chi Keung.
  • Although the menu is mostly Cantonese, including a delicious selection of dim sum, Yi Long Court also serves Peking duck — and you can’t leave China without trying this dish.
  • The Five-Star hotel’s Lobby restaurant serves daily breakfast and one of Shanghai’s best afternoon teas, complete with buttery scones, clotted cream and live music.
