Hotel d'Inghilterra Roma – Starhotels Collezione

A storied sanctuary in the heart of Rome
VERIFIED LUXURY
When Hotel d'Inghilterra Roma – Starhotels Collezione reopened after a yearlong renovation in 2024, it marked a new chapter in the life of one of the Eternal City’s most storied hotels. Set just steps from the Spanish Steps and tucked along the quiet Via Bocca di Leone, this historic 16th-century palazzo first welcomed travelers in 1845 and quickly became a home away from home for literary legends and Hollywood icons like Lord Byron, John Keats, Mark Twain, Ernest Hemingway, Elizabeth Taylor and Gregory Peck. Now, after a careful overhaul, the luxury hotel emerges as a refined, boutique-style city retreat, blending timeless Roman spirit with contemporary luxury across its 80 rooms and suites.

Designed to feel like a grand private residence, every detail was hand-picked with the sole intent of preserving the hotel’s rich heritage. Handcrafted details, from antique mirrors to rich leathers and curated artworks, give every space a soul steeped in history yet is still quietly contemporary. Juliet balconies and winter garden windows open to glimpses of iconic rooftops and hidden courtyards, while the ground level Café Romano offers the quintessential Roman cafe life. In a city where a millennia of history collides, Hotel d’Inghilterra remains a timeless sanctuary.

Our Inspector's Highlights

  • Hotel d'Inghilterra’s design details are a sumptuous feast — Rubelli fabrics, Dedar wallpapers, buttery marble, glittering chandeliers and velvet settees in a contemporary take on aristocratic glamour. Each floor pays tribute to ancient Roman frescoes, with palettes of Pompeii red, Egyptian blue, pale ochre and soft ecru. It feels more like slipping into a private Roman residence than a hotel. The luxury hotel supports traditional Roman artisans, from micromosaic makers to bespoke tailors, keeping centuries-old crafts alive.
  • Breakfast at the ground-floor Cafè Romano is legendary, curated by pastry chef Edoardo Volpe (formerly of iconic Cova Pasticceria Montenapoleone). His decadent morning spread features towering trays of maritozzi, pain au chocolat, cornetti, farm-fresh eggs, artisanal cheeses and delicate charcuterie.
  • Poised on a side street just off Piazza di Spagna, Cafè Romano remains quietly tucked away yet buzzes with the Roman social set from lunch through late-night aperitivi. It’s the perfect perch to glimpse la dolce vita in action.
  • Bartender Angelo di Giorgi is a Roman master of the craft. His martinis are executed with such elegance they could qualify for national heritage status. His signature cocktail, Verde Amaro, layers bittersweet artichoke liqueur with Branca Menta and fresh lime, capturing the spirit of Italy in a single sip.
  • Chef Andrea Sangiuliano champions the flavors of Lazio on the hotel’s seasonal menu. Spring highlights include a poached egg with artichoke cream and agretti (friar’s bread), and a standout chitarrina pasta with calamari, fava beans and almond pesto. His personal menu pick: a soulful, tradition-honoring amatriciana, crafted with exceptional guanciale and the freshest seasonal tomatoes.
