When most people think of Rome, they think of its major sights — the Colosseum, Spanish Steps, Vatican — but this Italian capital has more to offer than its major landmarks. Rome is filled with hidden gems — you could turn a corner and see an evocative ancient ruin, or peek into the courtyard of a Renaissance-era palazzo and find a medieval fountain. But lest you think Rome is only filled with ancient artifacts, the famously traditional city is also getting increasingly current. Rome has two new contemporary art museums, the MACRO and the MAXXI, plus more hotels, trendy wine bars and restaurants. The combination of new and old makes it easy to indulge in just about anything when in Rome.
