Salamander Middleburg

A magnificent Virginia horse country resort
VERIFIED LUXURY
A stylish addition to Sheila C. Johnson’s Salamander Collection, the luxurious Salamander Middleburg is perched on 340 scenic acres in the heart of Virginia’s horse and wine country. You may think you’ve pulled up to an old Virginia Piedmont mansion — and in a way, you have. The hotel was modeled after Johnson’s personal home just a few miles down the road and designed to look as if it’s been there for generations.

The elegant equestrian theme that you’ll find throughout Salamander Middleburg carries into the restaurants. Head to Gold Cup Wine Bar for a wine tasting from local Virginia vintners and some internationally influenced small plates. Be sure to save room for dinner at Harrimans Grill, the resort’s signature restaurant. Executive sous chef Jose Linares melds his passion of seasonal flavors, fresh seafood, local butcher cuts and imaginative desserts, resulting in a sumptuous menu of local fare with a global flair.

Our Inspector's Highlights
  • It’s hard to be bored during a stay at Salamander Middleburg. Whether you venture down to the 22-stall horse barn for a trail ride, embark on a treetop canopy tour or simply unwind in the 23,000-square-foot spa, there’s an activity for everyone.
  • Although the entire resort is technically 340 acres, only 140 of those are cleared. That means that there are miles upon miles of hiking, biking and riding trails.
  • Surrounded by rolling hills and quaint villages, the luxury destination resort is conveniently located near some of Virginia’s best offerings.
  • There are 50 wineries within a 60-minute drive and countless equestrian events throughout the area. Salamander Middleburg sits at 500 North Pendleton Street in Middleburg, Virginia, and while you are completely set back from the town when you’re on property, keep in mind that it’s only a seven-minute walk from the hotel’s front door to downtown Middleburg — trust us, it has been timed.
Things to Know
  • When the weather gets bad, take your activities inside to the 23,000-square-foot spa to enjoy the delightful treatments (don’t miss out on the wet areas in the locker rooms either).
  • You can take part in culinary classes year-round, which take place in the state-of-the-art cooking studio.
  • The main corridor of Salamander Middleburg is meant to feel as if you’re arriving at a friend’s home rather than a 168-room hotel. On either side of the living room, you’ll find more hangout areas, including a library stocked with books that have been checked out by residents for years at the local library.
The Rooms
  • Salamander Middleburg offers 168 gorgeously appointed rooms. Each room is spacious (the smallest is 545 square feet) and boasts the latest and greatest in technology and amenities.
  • Spread over four floors — with each level themed by season — the guest rooms and suites are luxurious and welcoming.
  • Keeping in line with the rest of the resort’s inspiration and incorporating the surrounding outdoors, all of the rooms flaunt walkout balconies (or terraces on the ground floor).
  • There’s plenty of closet space for those who can’t seem to pack light even if it’s just a weekend stay, and 50 percent of guest rooms (including all 17 suites) have fireplaces. Canopied beds and unique artwork make all of the rooms quite homey.
  • Bathrooms are stocked with pedestal tubs, large walk-in showers and flat-screen TVs, while the bedroom offers a spacious sitting area (read: no more eating breakfast on your bed if you don’t want to).
The Restaurants
  • Harrimans Grill, named after the family that owned the property before Sheila C. Johnson, showcases fresh, seasonal ingredients with heavy regional influences.
  • The signature restaurant is open to outside diners and hotel guests for breakfast and dinner, as well as Sunday brunch.
  • Lunch and light bites can be had in Gold Cup Wine Bar, which features internationally inspired small plates and an exquisite sushi menu on the weekends.
  • The bar also hosts weekly wine seminars with talks by local winemakers as part of the Virginia Vintners program.
