Northern Virginia

Not all of the local tourist attractions are within the borders of D.C. Several key memorials and historic sites are across the Potomac in Northern Virginia. One of the most visited sites is Arlington National Cemetery, where you'll see famous grave sites, including that of President John F. Kennedy. Another tourist stop is in Alexandria at Mount Vernon, the home of President George Washington. Fredericksburg is often called a "middleman city" for its location between Richmond and Washington D.C. Many buildings built before 1775 still stand in the historic part of the city. Leesburg is in a scenic area of rolling hills and thoroughbred horse farms. Just 15 miles from D.C., Vienna has a small-town feel to it with a historic district. The oldest of more than 25 American towns to be named after the first president, Washington was surveyed in 1749 by none other than George Washington himself. The streets remain laid out exactly as surveyed and still  bear the names of families who owned the land on which the town was founded.
