Mandarin Oriental Mayfair, London

East-meets-West with style in Mayfair
VERIFIED LUXURY

Mandarin Oriental Mayfair, London is the more discreet, modern and intimate sister property to the iconic Hyde Park outpost. Sitting at the crossroads of art and fashion in Hanover Square, the hotel dedicates itself to local culture and craftsmanship. It’s palpable in the design, dining options, art installations and experiences on offer.

Set back from the pretty square, the entrance is unassuming. But the lobby, resplendent in rare Ming green marble, makes a big impression. Meander across a glass walkway and you’re transported to the heart of the building — a large, spiral staircase winds down to Akira Back (the eponymous chef’s first U.K. restaurant) with triple-height glass ceilings that flood the gallery-like space with light.

The hotel was designed by Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners with interiors by Studio Indigo, and beautifully showcases Mandarin Oriental’s Asian heritage through the prolific use of that green Ming marble, ikebana-inspired floral arrangements, silk accents and intricate wooden sculptures. These nods to the hotel’s roots are seamlessly blended with locally inspired elements (the choice of green marble also pays homage to leafy Hanover Square) and the works of renowned British artists and fashion designers, including Vivienne Westwood (who created the property’s signature fan, a Mandarin Oriental tradition).

Our Inspector's Highlights

  • Hanover Square is sandwiched between bustling Regent Street and the designer boutiques of New Bond Street, making the London hotel a fantastic base for shoppers of all tastes.
  • Head to the spa for some TLC. It’s a subterranean retreat with Mayfair’s largest swimming pool, a fantastic fitness area and bespoke treatments.
  • The hotel’s main restaurant, Akira Back, is a feast for all the senses. Artwork by the chef’s mother adorns the walls and menu, a larger-than-life wooden sculpture adds a sense of movement and volume to the space, and there doesn’t seem to be a bad seat in the space. As for the menu, it’s a Korean-Asian medley of playful sushi dishes like a “tuna pizza” (tuna sashimi, umami aioli, micro shiso and white truffle oil on a thin, crunchy crust) and the popular “Hot Mess” rolls (sashimi poke, crab tempura and spicy ponzu aioli), as well as more sophisticated plates such as wagyu and miso cod.
  • Named after the Korean word for “expert,” Dosa is a chef’s table experience in a slick gray open kitchen seating just 14 guests. Book in advance to witness chef Back’s masterful preparation of Korean-inspired dishes.
  • ABar is a dark, sultry spot for cocktails with an Asian twist (try the miso negroni or the sesame margarita). A live DJ will keep you well entertained until the wee hours.

The Rooms

  • The boutique hotel offers just 50 rooms, 22 of which are suites. They all feature high-tech touches and bathrooms are particularly lavish, with Toto toilets, marble tiles, deep soaking tubs, separate showers and Dyson hair dryers.
  • Guest rooms have been designed by U.K.-based Studio Indigo. Hard and soft furnishings adopt a rich gem color palette. The living spaces, bathrooms and bedrooms are resplendent in emerald green, deep red, bright turquoise and uplifting pink. Bespoke lighting and furniture incorporate metallic finishes in brass, bronze and gold to add to the vibrancy of the interiors.
  • Hand-painted silk wallpaper from de Gournay is a stunning designer feature in each room. The flowering magnolia with hand-stitched detailing pays homage to the trees in Hanover Square, while the leaves flow with the feng shui of each room.
  • In lieu of a classic fluffy robe, you will find a fine silk kimono hanging in the closet, which you can wear during your stay and purchase to take home.
  • Guests traveling with four-legged friends will be happy to know that there are dog-friendly rooms and amenities.
