Splendido, A Belmond Hotel, Portofino

A Riviera icon reimagined
VERIFIED LUXURY
Perched above Portofino's harbor, Splendido, A Belmond Hotel, Portofino has been a fixture of the Italian Riviera since opening as a hotel in the early 1900s after beginning life as a 16th-century Benedictine monastery. Following a multi-year renovation led by designer Martin Brudnizki, the hillside retreat reopened in 2025 with refreshed guest rooms, public spaces and dining venues that celebrate Ligurian craftsmanship through hand-painted details, locally inspired patterns and a more residential feel.

The 52-room hotel offers views of Portofino Bay from nearly every angle, from the balconied suites to the heated saltwater pool overlooking the coastline. Dine at open-air La Terrazza, where chef Corrado Corti highlights Ligurian ingredients, or relax with a cocktail at the redesigned Splendido Grill. A Dior-branded spa, tennis court and concierge-arranged Riviera experiences round out the Old World-opulent stay.

Our Inspector's Highlights

  • Located above the harbor rather than directly on the waterfront, Splendido offers a quieter setting removed from the village crowds. A complimentary shuttle service connects guests with sister hotel Splendido Mare, allowing easy access to the piazzetta, shops and harbor-side dining.
  • Splendido has long been associated with Portofino’s glamorous past, hosting figures including Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton and Walt Disney during the golden age of Riviera travel.
  • The renovation introduced Dior Spa at Splendido, the brand’s first spa in Italy. The garden-set wellness space includes four treatment rooms, a private terrace overlooking the bay and services featuring Dior skincare alongside relaxation and beauty rituals.
  • Among the Portofino hotel’s curated excursions is a visit to La Portofinese, an organic farm in the area producing olive oil, wine and honey. Experiences include guided visits and picnics featuring focaccia, cured meats and other regional specialties.
  • The concierge team can organize outings that showcase the surrounding coastline, including kayaking treks around Portofino’s marine area, boat trips along the Ligurian coast, visits to Castello Brown and guided walks through Parco Naturale Regionale di Portofino.

The Rooms

  • The rooms feature a softer interpretation of Italian glamour, combining layered textiles, custom furnishings, hand-painted details and a palette inspired by the Ligurian landscape.
  • Many accommodations offer private balconies or terraces overlooking Portofino Bay framed by floor-to-ceiling French doors. Rooms without direct sea views look toward the hotel’s landscaped gardens or historic buildings, but the surrounding coastline remains the defining element of the stay.
  • As part of the renovation, Splendido upgraded many of its traditional rooms to larger suites, though all received a maximalist overhaul in the form of floral-patterned wallpaper, a pastel palette and trompe-l'oeil accents.
  • Signature suites provide the most exclusive stays. Standout accommodations include La Baronessa Suite, named for one of the property’s legendary former guests, and La Dolce Vita Suite, which features a private garden.
  • Storied Italian crafthouse Medea supplied the baroque-meets-modern furniture. Expect tufted headboards with gilded frames, painted side tables and pastel chaise lounges.
