Mandarin Oriental, Doha

Understated luxury in historic Doha
VERIFIED LUXURY

The first hotel to open in Doha’s Msheireb (which means “place to drink water”) Downtown district, Mandarin Oriental, Doha has already established itself as one of the city’s most sought-after luxury stays.

The property is a cool and stylish oasis in this redeveloped, up-and-coming neighborhood. And it is clear from your personalized arrival in the understated lobby to the bespoke Qatari-influenced amenities in your room that the hotel wants you to feel both at home and somewhere quite special.

With 249 natural light-drenched rooms and suites, two temperature-controlled rooftop pools, and nine bars and restaurants (don’t miss the Instagrammable dessert bar), Mandarin Oriental has brought its attention to detail and stylish flair to Qatar.

Our Inspector's Highlights

  • Mandarin Oriental, Doha’s rooms are thoughtfully designed, from the separate soaking tub and rain shower to the desk that can double as a dining table and walls of large windows that allow lots of natural light.
  • Shop till you drop at Souq Waqif — the luxury hotel is within walking distance of this beloved Doha attraction. It’s also close to the waterfront promenade the Corniche.
  • Opt for some prime pampering at the 32,600-square-foot spa. The serene space is not only beautifully designed (white marble keeps things light, airy and elegant), but also offers Mandarin Oriental’s brand of Asian-inspired Zen with an Arabian twist — look out for the gold quartz sand treatment bed.
  • The rooftop pools — complete with dreamy private cabanas — have stunning views of Doha’s futuristic skyline.
  • The hotel’s gym is equipped with the latest equipment; dedicated Pilates, TRX and Queenax rooms; and a ladies section.

Things to Know

  • Mandarin Oriental is the first hotel to open in the revitalized heart of historic Doha. There are few cafés, restaurants and other amenities within walking distance.
  • It is a 10- to 15-minute drive to Doha’s business and government hub, West Bay, so be sure to factor in Doha’s infamous traffic before heading out.
  • This is a city hotel, and despite having a beautiful internal courtyard, there is little in the way of outdoor space. To soak up some sun, head to the rooftop pool deck, or make the 17-minute walk to the Corniche’s waterfront.
  • Restaurant IZU has two dining rooms — an upstairs space and a downstairs option that opens onto the square — but only the upstairs venue serves alcohol.

The Rooms

  • Just as the Msheireb neighborhood blends old and new, the hotel’s décor melds contemporary design and neutral colors with traditional Qatari elements, like the geometric patterns on the walls and carpets.
  • The Doha hotel boasts six kinds of suites, ranging from the two-room Junior Suite to the epic Royal Suite, which has a private elevator, kitchen and plunge pool.
  • Accommodations start at a generous 484 square feet, but for a mix of size and comfort, opt for the 538-square-foot Deluxe Rooms. They come with a roomy sofa and work area.
  • Not all rooms have views of the Doha skyline. To ensure a sweeping city vista, book a Deluxe Room or Studio Suite.
  • For the ultimate splurge, go for the 1,722-square-foot Baraha View Suite, which has a private majlis (traditional Qatari meeting area), a separate entertainment room and views of the town square.

The Restaurants

  • Mediterranean venue IZU from chef Izu Ani is actually two restaurants in one: the downstairs is the more casual café-style eatery, while the white-tablecloth-clad upstairs skews more fine dining. The lobster pasta is a must-order from either dining room.
  • Be sure to ask staff to show you to the secret bar upstairs at IZU, a speakeasy-style lounge hidden behind a concealed door that requires an access code for entry.
  • Inspired by the famed Silk Road trading route between Europe and Asia, Mosaic has nine live-cooking stations highlighting dishes from the Arab world to Japan and everywhere in between. Indian-style grilled fare cooked in the Tandoor oven is a highlight, as is the made-to-order sushi.
  • Almas Afternoon Tea served in the Mandarin Lounge provides a welcome respite from the busy city. All the sweet (pistachio and raspberry canelés) and savory (foie gras macarons) morsels are created in house and the cardamom and clove tea is blended especially for the Doha hotel.
  • On the ground floor, Gelato scoops out housemade flavors like Arabic coffee, locally produced honey and Medjool dates. Order one of the nitro ice cream sundaes to watch your frosted treat being made before your eyes.
