SO/ Sotogrande Spa & Golf Resort Hotel

A retreat with Southern Spanish flavor
VERIFIED LUXURY
Hidden among bougainvillea-filled gardens and an undulating 18-hole golf course, SO/ Sotogrande Spa & Golf Resort Hotel combines bold design-forward style with exceptional locally rooted dining and the tranquil feel of a flowing Andalusian village. Part of Ennismore’s fashion-driven SO/ hotel brand, the property sits in the smart coastal development of Sotogrande, yet has a secluded inland location overlooking cork forests, olive groves and distant mountains.

With a luxe light-flooded spa and a stash of other wellness and fitness offerings (among them a 24-hour gym and several glinting pools), the hotel is a destination in its own right, but it also makes a stylish base for exploring the surrounding part of Andalusia. The entire place draws inspiration from a renowned old cortijo (farmhouse) that once stood on this spot and has been creatively designed in collaboration with respected Spanish swimwear designer Dolores Cortés, including the 152 soothing rooms and suites anchored in Southern Spanish flavor.

Our Inspector's Highlights

  • Stepping into the glass-framed reception pavilion, you can’t help but notice a flock of hand-crafted terra cotta swallows suspended from the ceiling and the custom-made lattice-like walls of ceramic arches. This focus on local art and traditional crafts sweeps through the property, from the hyper-realistic floral murals by Andalusian artist José Fernández Ríos in the meandering gardens to typical ceramic pitchers transformed into lamps in the rooms, restaurants and lounges.
  • Spa & Wellness Club Sotogrande provides a nearly 38,000-square-foot haven of relaxation with glimpses of the Mediterranean Sea on the horizon from its eight cabins. Treatments include a cleansing hammam-style ritual beginning with an olive-based wrap. Outdoors, there is a sun-washed yoga deck overlooking the grounds, available for both expert-guided classes and self-led practice.
  • Popular with visitors from Madrid, Sotogrande is known for its thriving polo, golf and yachting scenes. Sherry-making Jerez, fun-loving Marbella, history-rich Seville and a string of lesser-known pueblos blancos (whitewashed villages) are all within easy day-tripping distance, as are the pearly beaches of the undeveloped Costa de la Luz.
  • The star of the onsite dining scene is Cortijo Santa María 1962, which pulls in a local crowd with its inventive Andalusia-inspired menus devised by decorated France-born chef Nicolas Isnard. New dishes arrive with each season; don’t miss the creations with local almadraba tuna in summer or a tasting of Southern Spanish cheeses from the roaming cart. Poolside Marxa brings the laid-back vibe and grill-driven cooking of a Spanish chiringuito (beach restaurant), while indoor-outdoor Ixo specializes in original tapas like sherry-infused king prawns and Payoyo-cheese croquettes, often accompanied by live music.
  • Families with children are well catered for, with facilities including an activity-packed kids clubs for ages 4 to 13, a dedicated pool where games and slides await, and a wide choice of family-friendly rooms.

The Rooms

  • The 152 rooms (including 36 suites) have a calming, creative look that wouldn’t feel out of place in a chic urban setting, with swooping arches, richly textured walls, rattan lamps and Mediterranean-inspired hues like terra cotta and sun yellow. Floor-to-ceiling windows frame the surrounding scenery and beam in the crisp natural light this part of Spain is famous for.
  • Tile-adorned bathrooms make a splash in every room, bringing in rainfall showers, separate bathtubs and amenities by vegan-friendly Australian brand Grown Alchemist. In some categories, freestanding tubs are set in the window.
  • The contemporary cortijo feel continues in the swish suites, the finest of which have two en suite king rooms, indoor greenery, a living-lounge area and multiple terraces above the tropical grounds.
  • Every room has its own private balcony, terrace or garden that invites lingering, ideally over a glass of Jerez sherry or another local tipple.
