Shangri-La Hotel, Bangkok

A serene retreat in hectic Bangkok
VERIFIED LUXURY
The beauty of Shangri-La Hotel Bangkok is in its riverside location in the Bang Rak District, a secluded sanctuary outside of the hectic city center that still provides easy access to Bangkok’s main attractions. The nearby river taxi and Skytrain stops allow you to maintain your mobility while indulging in the comforts the Shangri-La brand is known for — for instance, you can take advantage of its hybrid airport limousine service and see how the luxury hotel can make a trip to the often-chaotic Bangkok comfortable.

Our Inspector's Highlights
  • The Krungthep Wing has large, plush rooms with spectacular views.
  • The Shangri-La Wing has easy access to the hotel’s top-flight amenities, including the gym, pool and restaurants.
  • Horizon Cruise is a private river cruise offered to Shangri-La guests; it features an international buffet and, more importantly, the chance to spend time on the water and see the city from the river.
  • Horizon Club members get a complimentary buffet breakfast, evening cocktails and hors d’oeuvres, a free suit pressing and newspapers.
  • The Krungthep Deluxe Balcony and Suites also enjoy extra privileges, including complimentary breakfast, afternoon tea, early-evening cocktails, newspapers, in-room fruit, the pressing of two garments and priority restaurant reservations.
Things to Know
  • The Bangkok hotel has two separate wings with two separate entrances.
  • While the Krungthep wing has magnificent views, the tradeoff is a 10-minute walk through a winding hallway to access those luxury amenities.
  • Krungthep has its own pool, albeit smaller than the one in the other wing.
  • All guests at the Shangri-La receive complimentary WiFi.
  • CHI, The Spa has some of the largest spa suites in the city. The treatment menu rightfully focuses on Thai and other Asian techniques, especially pressure points (traditional Thai massage) and spices and herbs (Jasmine Rice Body Glow and Thai Herbal Compress).
The Rooms
  • The 25-story Shangri-La Wing has 673 rooms and opened in 1986; five years later a smaller second tower, the Krungthep Wing, with 129 rooms, debuted.
  • All rooms offer a stylish, serene setting by combining traditional Thai décor and modern comforts — think Asian silks, teak finishings, flat-screen TVs, executive writing desks and a sophisticated neutral backdrop of tans and beiges.
  • Located right on the Chao Phraya River, the Krungthep Wing takes advantage of its location — there are balconies-with-a-view in every guest room.
  • River views can be had in Deluxe River View or Deluxe Balcony rooms in the Shangri-La Wing, too.
The Restaurants
  • The Shangri-La has six eateries, two lounges and a bar. Angelini is well-known for its sophisticated setting and excellent Italian fare, such as spinach and goose liver risotto.
  • Salathip serves gourmet versions of traditional Thai food (hot and sour tiger prawn soup with lemongrass), with a strong emphasis on presentation.
  • The riverside buffet, NEXT2 Cafe, is famous for its great market-style buffet, especially during brunch (prepare to settle in for a long, delicious grazing session).
  • For dessert, The Chocolate Boutique has an indulgent menu of chocolate cakes, pralines and pastries.
