The Spa at Mandarin Oriental, Tokyo

A sky-high Tokyo spa
VERIFIED LUXURY
You’ll feel on top of the world at The Spa at Mandarin Oriental, Tokyo. And it’s not because of the heavenly four-handed Oriental Harmony scrub and massage.

Perched on the 37th floor of Mandarin Oriental, Tokyo in the Nihonbashi Mitsui Tower, the spa gives you a dazzling vista of the city below through top-to-toe windows. Our favorite view is from the Tranquility Suite, where you can gaze out of two walls of windows from a marble infinity tub.

Our Inspector's Highlights
  • Every service kicks off with a foot ritual, which symbolizes the washing away of the outside world. The gesture is a tipoff that a water theme flows through the spa.
  • The calm begins as soon as you enter the reception area, where a shiny smoky-beige fabric that resembles cascading water covers the walls.
  • Get a glimpse of the city from the serene spa’s stunning jetted pool, water lounge and dry sauna, all of which have floor-to-ceiling windows.
  • Men have their own menu filled with delights such as the Mandarin Man, which starts with a mini facial and ends with a hot stone back massage.
  • For a unique service, try Totally Tokyo - “Five” Journeys from Nihonbashi. The treatment includes a head massage, a full-body shiatsu massage and stretching, and it uses green tea, pine, bamboo, rice bran and plum to soothe your mind. Totally Tokyo is a nod to the hotel’s location in the Nihonbashi district — during the Edo period, it was the starting point of five routes that connected the capital to the outer provinces.

Things to Know
  • The most popular treatment, and our personal favorite, is the Time Ritual, which allows you to reserve a block of time rather than specific services, allowing the Tokyo haven to tailor the treatments to your needs.
  • The Five-Star facility offers an ideal spot for a fun spa and shopping day.
  • To make the most of your time at the Japanese spa, arrive an hour early. That way you can do a circuit in the crystal steam room and ice fountain arctic refresher and still have time to take in the mesmerizing views.
The Treatments
  • The detoxifying Razul Escape includes a full-body exfoliation, a mud application and thermal steam before a massage.
  • The Moments to Share spoils couples with a deep-cleansing facial and a rubdown.
  • The relaxing Oriental Essence signature massage helps jet-lagged travelers or anyone carrying a lot of stress; it focuses on the spots that carry tension.
  • In the therapeutic massage, therapists relieve your aches using deep strokes with their elbows and forearms.
  • The Essential Facial cleanses, soothes and refreshes your skin in 60 minutes.
The Rooms
  • Of the nine treatment rooms, the four spacious spa suites offer the most pampering experience. Savor luxe finishing touches in the Spa Studio, a smaller treatment room where you can enjoy a mani/pedi with Christian Louboutin polish.
  • One of these sumptuous suites provides perks such as your own dining area, dual massage beds, private steam showers and glimpses of Mount Fuji.
  • A handful of the treatments are specially made for the spa suites. Take the Kiatsu, a blend of Thai massage and shiatsu that exclusively takes place in the Serenity Suite.
  • Our pick is the half-day Ultimate Bathing Ritual, which takes place in the Tranquility Suite. To prep you for a bath, your skin is treated to an exfoliating scrub and then a nourishing layer of fragrant aromatherapy oil.
  • The water motif, also featured in the waiting room and relaxation lounge, ripples through the treatment rooms. Light textiles bearing suibokuga, Japanese ink paintings, amid wood floors and zebrawood walls.
