The Spa at Torrey Pines

VERIFIED LUXURY
The Spa at Torrey Pines has an oceanfront setting and a surrounding forest that influence many of the treatments. There are numerous water treatments, including balneotherapy, a seawater bath in a hydrotherapy tub. Body scrubs use coastal sage and pine for exfoliation. Several facials combat aging, including a champagne facial that uses yeast extracts and bubbly. The spa also has a list of rituals on the menu, which blend body treatments with massage. The aromasoul ritual, for instance, uses Chinese massage techniques to increase the flow of energy and replenish vitality.

Our Inspector's Highlights
  • Housed inside The Lodge at Torrey Pines, it’s the only Forbes Travel Guide Four-Star spa in San Diego County.
  • In the relaxation lounge, you can plop down on the padded white chairs and ottomans, read a magazine or nibble on trail mix and fruit and drink some tea or lemon-cucumber water.
  • There’s sure to be a treatment for everyone at this spa sanctuary.
  • The exhausting menu of massages, facials, masks and wraps, water therapies, exfoliating scrubs and, for the ultimate, “rituals” that combine a scrub, wrap, hydrotherapy and rubdown into one blissful package.
  • Those sporting baby bumps can opt for the prenatal rubdown, and lovebirds can get cozy with side-by-side treatments in the couples massage.
Things to Know
  • If you’re sorely in need of a massage and want one at The Spa at Torrey Pines, the best way to score an appointment would be to call and book one yourself directly.
  • Since the massage oasis is set inside The Lodge at Torrey Pines, you must call the hotel directly and then ask to be transferred to the spa. Though if you are staying at the hotel, the concierge can hook you up.
  • If you have to cancel that cobblestone massage at The Spa at Torrey Pines, you must do so within 24 hours of your appointment.
The Treatments
  • If you have knots the size of softballs in your back, The Spa at Torrey Pines offers a number of massages to help knock them out of your body.
  • The most popular body treatment is the classic Swedish massage, which uses long, soothing strokes to help you relax.
  • For a deep-tissue treatment that blasts muscle tension, go for the therapeutic massage. The Eastern shiatsu/acupressure rubdown unblocks energy, kick-starts your natural healing process and restores your bod.
  • The aromatherapy massage is supposed to heal, relieve chronic tension-filled spots and relax you; the spa offers oils that either energize and de-stress, promote circulation, get rid of toxins or calm you down.
  • The cobblestone massage is the California spa’s version of a hot-stone treatment, and the table Thai massage uses pressure points and rocking rhythmic compressions.
The Facilities
  • The waiting area doesn’t offer much; it’s just several high-backed chairs in the reception area. But it won’t really matter because once you sign in for your treatment, you’ll be led into the locker room, where you can slip into a robe
  • Make the rounds among the lemongrass-sage inhalation room, sauna and steam room. Or you can shower in one of the tiled stalls or squeeze.
  • Sweat away the tension in the gym across the hall from the Four-Star spa.
