Inspired by the three lunar phases of Hawaiian tradition (Hoʻonui, Poepoe and Hoʻēmi), the Maui spa’s wellness concept aims to connect you with the area’s natural rhythms. “Kilolani” is Hawaiian for “stargazers,” making it an apt name for a spa inspired by the moon’s importance to island culture. Treatments change every 10 days to reflect the ever-changing faces of the Hawaiian moon calendar, meaning that every visit to the Maui spa is a unique experience.
At a palatial 50,000 square feet, Kilolani Spa is the largest wellness retreat in the Hawaiian Islands and also boasts the state’s only hammam.
While the Maui spa may draw inspiration from ancient tradition, its design is anything but dated. Interiors imagined by the renowned Tihany Design firm are decidedly modern, using clean lines, dark colors and naturally occurring materials like volcanic stone paired with chic uplighting.
Kilolani Spa’s hydrotherapy facilities embrace the moon’s connection to water. The hydrotherapy gardens are a must-visit before your treatment for rejuvenation contrast therapy thanks to open-air construction that allows sea breezes and a soundtrack of crashing waves to accompany your hot and cold plunges. The communal wet lounge and salt water vitality pool also offer a coed environment to reflect, reconnect and socialize.
Essential oils featured in services are made by a local woman who grows plants in line with the cycles of the moon. These botanicals change every 10 days along with the treatment menu to help you commune with your natural surroundings.

The Treatments

For an indulgent taste of the luxury spa’s moon-centric offerings, opt for the two-hour Kilolani Signature Massage. A scrub featuring florals unique to the current lunar cycle sets the tone for an essential oil body massage filled with long, wave-like strokes that leave your muscles feeling completely relaxed.
Among the more unusual treatments as part of Kilolani Spa’s Wellness Rituals is the 90-minute sound healing experience. Performed by Maui sound healers in an open-air wooden chapel, the alfresco service features an array of traditional instruments paired with cleansing ocean air to lull even the most flustered mind into a state of Zen. There are also several astrology readings on offer.
Locally picked produce plays a starring role in the Tropical Superfood Facial. Yuzu, pineapple and Kakadu plum are used in a rejuvenating treatment that aims to brighten and soften skin.
In case you’re looking for an indulgent way to feel more grounded, the 120-minute ‘Awa Relaxation Ritual embraces the healing energy of the land via ground ‘awa root, Maui-grown lavender, coconut oil, warm lava stones and volcanic clay that combine for a relaxing and revitalizing session.
