SOMM

A wine-forward bistro in the heart of Hong Kong
VERIFIED LUXURY

Editor's note: SOMM is closed through 2025 for renovations.

No matter how many times you visit SOMM, a modern French bistro in the heart of Central at The Landmark Mandarin Oriental, Hong Kong, the experience will continue to surprise you. This sommelier-led restaurant and bar boasts an incredible array of more than 1,600 champagnes, wines and sakes — the widest selection in the city — as well as seasonal, French-Japanese dishes that push gastronomy in refreshing new directions.

SOMM’s sculptural, intimate design comes courtesy of New York designer Adam D. Tihany, who is also behind recently revamped Amber restaurant next door. The curvaceous space, which takes inspiration from winemaking barrels, features gleaming walnut-wood ceilings, an inviting bar and a handful of intimate tables encircling the room. It feels casual yet refined, making SOMM an ideal option for date nights, business lunches and intimate evening drinks.

  • Dishes change seasonally. SOMM places a huge emphasis on the freshness and provenance of its produce.
  • Warmly lit interiors, deep walnut tones and rich fabrics create an inviting atmosphere that feels at once casual and sophisticated.

Things to Know

  • SOMM is open most of the day, serving up lunch, dinner and a special late-night menu. Just be sure to check before visiting, as there are short breaks in between service shifts.
  • If you’re a night owl, SOMMsupper is a popular option. Beginning at 9 p.m., the late-dining dining experience includes three courses accompanied by 90 minutes of free-flow wines.
  • You don't have to order a glass or full bottle at this flexible bar and restaurant. If you’d like to try a few wines over the course of your meal, ask about the 75ml tasting-sized pours.

The Wine

  • As part of its sommelier-driven ethos, SOMM always has at least two experts on hand to guide diners toward the best wine and sake pairings, based on their preferences and dishes.
  • If you’re not a wine connoisseur or collector, don't worry — SOMM is designed for wine lovers, but not necessarily industry insiders. The personable sommeliers make the experience approachable and enjoyable for wine newbies, while serious oenophiles will also be impressed with their depth of knowledge and personal insights.
  • The menu includes familiar faces like Dom Pérignon, Francis Ford Coppola and Château Smith Haut Lafitte Blanc, alongside surprising finds like Zankyo “Super 7” Junmai Daiginjo sake from Japan, Quinta de Lemos Touriga Nacional Red from Portugal and Domaine Jean-François Ganevat Chardonnay from France.
  • If you need a condensed version, look for the “Wines of the Month” section, which showcases a few of the sommelier’s top choices across regions or flavors.

The Food

  • In the kitchen is seasoned chef de cuisine Mario Paecke, who’s been with the Mandarin Oriental Group for several years, most recently working as the sous chef at Amber. The German native cut his teeth at some of the most prestigious restaurants in Germany.
  • A mixture of French and Japanese ingredients dominates the highly seasonal menu, which will surprise you with innovative flavors and refined plating. Every once in a while, Paecke also adds a little German flair to the menu in homage to his home.
  • Though SOMM’s dishes change regularly, look for seasonal variations on dishes such as oozy Taiyouran eggs crowned with crispy kadaifi pastry, sour cream and smoked pike perch roe; raw hamachi fish with heirloom radish; incredibly tender Lung Guang chicken with hedgehog mushrooms in yellow wine sauce; and Japanese pork belly smothered a sweet and savory barbecue sauce.
  • Leave space for dessert — with options like Abinao chocolate soufflé and coffee-cinnamon “doughnuts,” these treats are just the way to cap off your SOMM experience.
