The Charleston Grill

A Lowcountry staple worth celebrating
VERIFIED LUXURY
Charleston is a city recognized for its Southern charm and hospitality, so it only makes sense that one of its most storied dining institutions, The Charleston Grill, would have these ingredients at the heart of its dining experience.

The signature eatery at Forbes Travel Guide Recommended The Charleston Place, Charleston Grill has proudly served elevated Lowcountry favorites on crisp white tablecloths since the 1980s. The restaurant take things at a slower speed and is a welcomed refuge in these fast-paced times.

But even as one of the most iconic establishments in town, The Charleston Grill remains fresh. Some of that has to do with the kitchen’s reliance on the seasons’ guidance for the menu. The other part is the stewardship of chef Suzy Castelloe, an innovative culinary mind with a cosmopolitan palate and strong Carolina roots. The tasty combination makes it impossible for guests celebrating something special, even those who’ve been coming for decades, to not fall in love with the place after every visit.

Our Inspector's Highlights

  • After a 2023 full renovation that saw warm-toned upholstery, gold lighting, new carpet and a forest-green bar added to the mix, the dining room feels mature but not monotonous.
  • While chef Castelloe’s menu is largely guided by local purveyors and the calendar, there are a few standout dishes that you can count on seeing every time. The juicy prime beef tenderloin and succulent jumbo crab cake are showstoppers that diners have clamored over for years.
  • No matter how satisfying the entrées are, you’ll want to save room for something off the ever-changing dessert assortment. The spicy carrot cake is brilliant, and the cigar-shaped chocolate ganache is straight from a confectioner’s wildest dream.
  • Enjoy your Woodford Reserve- and banana cream-starred Compass (or any of the other delightful cocktails) from your table or the aforementioned bar near the front entrance.
  • Soft jazz tunes may be the background music most evenings at the Charleston restaurant, but on select nights, guests are treated to live piano and cello performances.

Things to Know

  • As you’d expect from a fine-dining establishment such as The Charleston Grill, a smart casual dress code is encouraged. During our most recent visit, every male guest we saw donned a collared shirt and slacks.
  • The intimate Vintner’s Room is not only the perfect place to host a private group dinner, but it works well as the setting for The Charleston Grill’s periodic wine classes.
  • The Charleston Grill does a remarkable job of making every night unforgettable. When it comes to holidays such as Christmas and New Year’s Eve, though, the Southern restaurant goes out of its way with special menus and themed cocktails.
