Park Hyatt Zanzibar

A UNESCO-listed manor on Tanzania’s shore
VERIFIED LUXURY
Set along Stone Town’s seafront, Park Hyatt Zanzibar blends Swahili heritage with understated luxury. Housed partly in a meticulously restored 19th-century mansion, the hotel feels like stepping into a living museum. High ceilings, carved wooden doors and shaded courtyards nod to Zanzibar’s storied past, while sleek interiors and discreet service deliver high-end polish.

Days begin with views of traditional dhows gliding past the infinity pool or treatments featuring local products in one of the spa’s suites, and end with fiery sunsets enjoyed from the waterfront Beach House over fresh seafood and spiced cocktails. Just outside the door, Stone Town’s labyrinthine alleys beckon with colorful markets and the lingering aroma of fresh spices.

After exploring, retreat to spacious rooms dressed in crisp linens and cool marble, where every detail, down to the hand-woven textiles, feels thoughtfully curated. The atmosphere is tranquil yet deeply connected to its surroundings, offering an authentic sense of place without sacrificing refined comforts.

Our Inspector's Highlights

  • Part of Park Hyatt Zanzibar occupies Mambo Msiige, a UNESCO-listed 19th-century Zanzibari mansion, seamlessly joined to a contemporary wing. Request a room in this historic section to enjoy an elegant blend of Swahili, Arabic and other influences.
  • The 67 rooms feature Omani-style arches, locally carved wooden accents and oversized balconies framing either Stone Town’s rooftops or the sea. Spacious bathrooms include deep soaking tubs and rainfall showers finished in marble.
  • The Dining Room draws inspiration from Zanzibar’s spice trade history. Expect fresh seafood and produce seasoned with clove, cinnamon and cardamom sourced straight from the island’s farms.
  • Want to explore further afield? Staff can arrange private spice farm tours, curated visits to nearby historic sites or dhow cruises timed to catch the fiery Zanzibari sunset.
  • The luxury hotel’s beachfront location can’t be beat. Enjoy a morning walk on the soft white sands, an afternoon dip in the oceanview infinity pool or watch a game of pickup soccer on the shore as the sun dips below the horizon.

Nearby Attractions

  • Foodies can explore the bustling Darajani Market and its huge array of spice vendors by day and discover street food favorites at Forodhani Gardens Night Market after sundown. Just five minutes from Park Hyatt Zanzibar, the latter fills with vendors after sunset, serving up Zanzibar pizza, skewered seafood and sugarcane juice pressed to order.
  • Once the sultan’s ceremonial palace, the House of Wonders offers a glimpse into Zanzibar’s royal and maritime past, all less than a 10-minute walk from your beachfront escape. Its grand Omani-style doors are among the largest and most ornate on the island.
  • Built by the Portuguese in the 17th century, the Old Fort of Zanzibar is the oldest building in Stone Town and now hosts cultural performances and art exhibitions. Its weathered stone walls tell stories of the island’s turbulent history.
  • In Stone Town, the waterfront Palace Museum gives an inside look into the lives of the Zanzibari royals. Constructed in the late 19th century, the structure served as the home of the sultan’s family.
  • A 30-minute drive outside the city, local spice farms offer guided tours and tastings of nutmeg, vanilla and clove cultivation. Many farms let you pick your own spices and prepare a traditional Swahili lunch onsite.
