Mandarin Oriental Palace, Luzern

Lake Lucerne’s Belle Epoque landmark
VERIFIED LUXURY

Since 1906, a regal Belle Epoque building has watched vigil over the deep blue waters of Lake Lucerne. In the fall of 2022, the palatial landmark reopened its doors as Mandarin Oriental Palace, Luzern, ushering in a new era of lakeside luxury in the Swiss Alps.

Faced with the daunting task of bringing the former Palace Luzern into the 21st century — without losing any of its historic charm — Swiss architectural firm Iwan Bühler Architekten and London interior designer Jestico + Whiles delivered on the tall order. Original features, such as checkerboard marble floors, pink-hued scagliola pillars and pale stucco walls, were restored to their former glory, while modern additions such as a contemporary art collection and bespoke Italian furniture blend in seamlessly with their stylish surroundings.

However, there is one mainstay that has only gotten better with time: The show-stopping views of the Swiss Alps, which are best enjoyed with a cup of coffee from your private balcony.

Our Inspector's Highlights

  • Mandarin Oriental Palace, Luzern keeps its signature lake views within arm’s reach at every opportunity. Wall-to-wall windows line the MOzern Bar & Brasserie all-day dining room while most of the 136 rooms boast Instagram-worthy vistas of the mountain-lined waters.
  • The luxury hotel’s rooms and suites beautifully blend historic charm with modern creature comforts. Think paneled walls painted a soothing neutral grey and parquet oak floors paired with modern brass chandeliers and hand-woven Tisca wool rugs.
  • What Spa Bellefontaine lacks in facilities, it more than makes up for with its spectacular services. The two-treatment room spa specializes in state-of-the-art facials featuring Swiss Bellefontaine products, developed by La Prairie co-founder Peter Yip.
  • Exclusive excursions offered through Mandarin Oriental Palace, Luzern let you explore the stunning Swiss Alps in style. Live your James Bond dreams with a snowmobile drive along the route where a famous Goldfinger car chase was filmed or dive beneath the surface of Lake Lucerne in a submarine to explore sunken shipwrecks.
  • While strolling the hallowed halls of this historic hotel, look out for oil paintings from the property’s original collection artfully displayed next to modern interpretations of those same works by Swiss artists.

The Restaurants

  • Savor French cuisine at Colonnade, a chic dining room with a glazed wine cabinet of more than 500 labels. The seasonal tasting menu can be enjoyed in three, five or eight courses of dishes like briny brown crab with kombu royal seaweed and Alpstein chicken dressed in a creamy crayfish Nantua sauce.
  • Try an elegant omakase menu at the intimate Minamo. The aptly named Japanese restaurant (“Minamo” translates to “reflected on the water surface”) serves plenty of raw fish preparations but also features a locally inspired meat course that could include grilled Swiss wagyu beef with savory black garlic.
  • The Lucerne hotel’s historic charm-meets-contemporary aesthetic is on full display at MOzern Bar & Brasserie. The all-day dining venue is anchored by a stunning circular bar that puts modern twists on classic cocktails, like a blueberry gin smash or a whiskey-tinted take on an Aperol spritz.
  • Take advantage of Lake Lucerne’s spectacular weather with an alfresco lunch at 1920s-inspired Quai 10. Nibble on Mediterranean-meets-mountain fare such as Albula mountain fava bean hummus or piri piri alpine chicken in a tangy tomato confit.
  • Take afternoon tea with a side of lake views in the light-filled veranda. From there you can savor classic British treats that have been elevated with Swiss ingredients.
