Fairmont Le Montreux Palace

A Swiss Riviera legend with a musical soul
VERIFIED LUXURY
The resplendent Fairmont Le Montreux Palace has anchored the Montreux shoreline since 1906, when architect Eugène Jost unveiled the Belle Époque landmark during the region’s Swiss Riviera-era boom. Built as an expansion of the Hôtel du Cygne, it arrived with then-innovative comforts — electric lighting, central heating and en suite baths — along with theatrical salons and lake-facing terraces that catered to the aristocrats, artists and other prominent regulars.

Across the 20th century, the grand palace stood at the crossroads of history, from serving as a military hospital for the Allies during both World Wars to hosting the signing of the 1936 Montreux Convention, all while steadily evolving into one of Switzerland’s most recognizable lakeside hotels. Its storied legacy was further elevated by a long association with the Montreux Jazz Festival, which deepened the property to the city’s cultural fabric.

Today, the luxury hotel balances heritage architecture with contemporary refinement across 236 rooms and suites, many refreshed with soft, lake-inspired tones. A 21,500-square-foot spa, indoor and outdoor pools, and beautifully designed restaurants ensure that it continues to be a timeless beacon for years to come.

Our Inspector's Highlights

  • Soak up the lakefront setting with Fairmont Le Montreux Palace’s premium categories, such as Deluxe Lake View rooms and Junior Suites, whose classic French doors open onto private balconies overlooking the water. Interiors pair contemporary finishes with preserved palace detailing, keeping Lake Geneva and Alpine views front and center.
  • The expansive wellness area features a grand heated indoor pool with the mountains in the backdrop and a manicured outdoor pool area near the like lined with sun loungers. In the spa, treatments center around advanced cellular skincare, offering highly technical, reverse-aging therapies powered by Swiss Perfection and Biologique Recherche.
  • The luxury hotel pays tribute to music luminaries like singer Freddie Mercury, producer Quincy Jones and Montreux Jazz Festival founder Claude Nobs with its suites. They double as mini museums, displaying personal photographs and memorabilia that also reference Montreux’s deep musical legacy. Each suite also comes with added amenities, including Bang & Olufsen sound systems and marble-clad hot tubs.
  • Fairmont Le Montreux Palace’s expansive Sunday brunch fills its Belle Époque salons with carving stations, lake fish, Swiss cheeses and a chocolate fountain finale that regularly draws a steady mix of locals and out-of-towners.
  • The hotel remains closely tied to the Montreux Jazz Festival, with live music, themed cocktails and a ground-floor festival boutique extending the event’s presence into the building year-round.

The Restaurants

  • Montreux Jazz Café presents a brasserie menu rooted in Swiss-French classics, including foie gras terrine with brioche, sole meunière to a cheddar burger. It reflects a balance of indulgence and regional sourcing.
  • Named for Montreux Jazz Festival founder Nobs, Funky Claude’s Bar is a lively late-night hot spot. Cocktails and regular live performances make it one of Montreux’s most popular hotel music venues.
  • Open during warmer months, the Montreux hotel’s La Terrasse du Petit Palais frames panoramic, unobstructed views of Lake Geneva and the Alps from its striking lakeside deck. It serves a light, seasonal menu of Mediterranean-inspired plates (try the lobster linguine) for lunch and dinner.
  • Wrapped in floor-to-ceiling windows, La Palmeraie overlooks the lake and mountains and serves an international breakfast buffet. The restaurant also hosts the Sunday brunch service.
  • For healthy fare, head to the spa’s Pureaty. Enjoy light dishes like tuna tataki with an arrabbiata-style sauce and a chickpea burger on a gluten-free bun.
