InterContinental Singapore

Singapore's unique retreat
VERIFIED LUXURY
When the InterContinental Singapore was being built, the Singaporean government had one stipulation regarding the hotel’s construction: the chain had to keep the original shophouses on the block and incorporate them into the hotel’s design style.

Thus, in the hotel’s 384 rooms and 19 suites, you’ll see a unique design throughout that incorporates a Western sensibility with a distinct Peranakan culture. The hotel even boasts unique Shophouse rooms, which directly reflect the influence of Straits Chinese culture in Singapore and are tastefully decorated with floral fabrics, Oriental carpets and carved hardwood furnishings.

Our Inspector's Highlights
  • The hotel is located in the heart of Bugis, a vibrant neighborhood that offers plentiful shopping as well as easy walking access to some of the more unique ethnic enclaves such as Little India and Arab Street.
  • There's plenty to do in the hotel itself, including splashing around in the outdoor rooftop pool to enjoying cocktails in the serene Lobby Lounge.
  • Partake in the hotel's Guided Heritage Trail, a weekly walk through the hotel's neighborhood that pinpoints historical and cultural points of interest along the way.
  • The refurbished Shophouse rooms are meant to reflect the area's Peranakan heritage with luxurious furnishings, intricate carvings and artifacts.
  • While some of the hotel's fine dining options may not be suitable for kids, the fun children's room service menu most definitely is. Little ones can choose from dishes like Bolognese with hide and seek veggies, watermelon popsicles and lychee frozen yogurt.
Things to Know
  • The warm and accommodating service truly stands out at this hotel, which caters to both business and leisure travelers.
  • It's also very family-friendly: There’s a shallow paddling pool for the little ones, and an InterContinental Planet Trekkers Children’s Menu created exclusively for them.
  • It's within walking distance of the Museum Planning Area, home to the Singapore Art Museum, National Museum of Singapore and eight other cultural institutions and monuments.
The Rooms
  • White walls, silk-threaded wall panels, wood floors and warm culturally appropriate furnishings (wooden fretwork, colorful headboards) meld beautifully with modern amenities like flat-screen televisions and Nespresso machines.
  • Some views in the guest rooms have vistas of the city's skyline, others have a look at a quaint narrow side street below.
  • The 430-square-foot Heritage Rooms have lovely Peranakan-style furnishings and a strong sense of place. Bonus: These rooms also come with Club InterContinental perks such as daily breakfast and evening cocktails.
The Restaurants
  • At the outpost of the renowned Tokyo restaurant Chikuyotei, you can expect to chow down on unagi hitsumabushi (a sort of dashi and eel porridge) and an array of top-quality Japanese specialties like tempura, sukiyaki and shabu shabu.
  • A throwback to the golden era of travel, Idlewild (the original name of John F. Kennedy International Airport) is a glamorous, retro bar with a cocktail list that takes inspiration from cities along the transatlantic route.
  • Ash & Elm is the breakfast, lunch and dinner spot within the hotel and focuses on traditional European cuisine based around three themes: a charcoal grill, wood-fired oven and cheese and charcuterie.
  • Classic Chinese spot Man Fu Yuan is elegant and understated serving elevated fare such as fresh seafood and handmade dim sum.
