The Seabird Ocean Resort & Spa

Oceanside’s high-end boutique beauty
VERIFIED LUXURY

The Seabird Ocean Resort & Spa is a boutique hotel that sits on a prime spot across the street from Oceanside’s main beach and the longest wooden pier on the West Coast. Opened in 2021, the hotel activated this water-facing downtown block, which, in recent years, has grown into a buzzy Southern California beach destination.

The hotel celebrates its locale with chic coastal décor and a design that takes full advantage of its oceanfront setting. Guests are welcomed into a bright, breezy lobby that leads to indoor and outdoor lounges with sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean, and open doors invite in the scent of salt air and the steady sound of the waves. It’s not unusual to see guests donning wetsuits and carrying surfboards as they make their way through the lobby after a day on the ocean.

The Seabird has 226 rooms across six floors, ranging in size from 376 to 1,241 square feet, with many of the units offering ocean views. The luxury here is understated, with thoughtful touches throughout the property.

Our Inspector's Highlights
  • Guests at the luxury hotel don’t have to haul any equipment over to the beach for a day in the sun. The resort’s Beach Rambler, a restored vintage camper, is parked on the sand across from the hotel and serves as an outpost where guests can reserve complimentary beach chairs and umbrellas, which hotel staff will set up. The Beach Rambler also includes a convenient shop where snacks and sundries can be purchased, and games like volleyball and cornhole are available for rent.
  • Piper, the hotel’s restaurant, features a wrap-around patio inviting diners to enjoy alfresco meals and a cozy interior with lots of natural light. The menu from chef Chris Carriker highlights ingredients from small farms and features locally caught seafood, handmade pastas and sweet and savory pastries. The restaurant serves breakfast, lunch and dinner daily, and its Sunday brunch is also popular with locals.
  • Rooms are appointed with custom-designed amenities such as seersucker robes from Mansfield International and custom-scented toiletries by Apothia, a beloved fragrance brand founded by Ron Robinson.
  • Sunny’s Spa & Beauty Lounge is a 7,000-square-foot wellness center with a coed lounge, nine treatment rooms, several stations for haircuts, manicures and pedicures, and a sauna that can transform into a “sanarium” experience with lower temperatures and higher humidity. It offers treatments that incorporate the latest wellness technologies, including Shiftwave Biohacking, which combines pulsed pressure waves and guided breathwork in a zero-gravity recliner, and the Aescape robot massage, the first automated and AI-powered massage that lets users customize their treatment. Sunny’s is the first spa in San Diego County to offer Aescape. Other treatments include IV hydration therapy, The Cove Ritual (a relaxation room combining a dry warming space, cooling mist and aromatherapy) along with traditional massages.
  • The resort’s third-floor pool deck overlooks the ocean and has a family-friendly ambience with plenty of lounge seating. There are four private cabanas and a hot tub.
Things to Know
  • The Seabird Ocean Resort & Spa and its adjacent sister property, Mission Pacific Beach Resort, made up the largest waterfront hotel development in San Diego County in more than 50 years at the time they were built. Oceanside, which is 45 minutes north of central San Diego and two hours from Los Angeles, had long been known for vacation rentals, motels and timeshares. The opening of these two resorts brought a new level of luxury accommodations and amenities to the city.
  • Oceanside has a long history of surfing culture, and the summer months are busy with major competitions like the USA Surfing Championships (June), Oceanside Longboard Surfing Club Contest and Beach Festival (August) and the Super Girl Surf Pro (September), the largest women’s surfing competition in the world.
  • Guests who want to try surfing can book a lesson through the hotel’s surf concierge, who will connect them with North County Surf Academy where they can learn to take on the waves with expert instruction from professional surfer Duran Barr.
  • The San Diego hotel presents OMA West at The Seabird, a satellite gallery of Oceanside Museum of Art that showcases rotating art exhibits, sharing the works of local artists and historic photos. Through the partnership, pieces in a variety of mediums are part of the hotel’s permanent collection and can be found throughout the property, such as Chorus by Michelle Montjoy, a large-scale installation made from recycled T-shirts, and origami pieces by Joseph Hwang depicting squid and horse mackerel.
  • Other nearby attractions include the California Surf Museum, which houses a permanent collection chronicling the history of the sport; The Strand, a paved promenade alongside the beach; and the Junior Seau Pier Amphitheatre, which regularly hosts community events and concerts.
