Rosewood Kauri Cliffs

The Northland’s all-suite golf retreat
VERIFIED LUXURY
To say that Rosewood Kauri Cliffs is aptly named would be an understatement. The New Zealand resort is perched dramatically above the Pacific Ocean, where waves pound the stony North coast shore and sea breezes are a constant companion.

The 22 suites and villas take full advantage of the hotel’s prime address with private balconies or terraces and wall-to-wall windows that frame those breathtaking ocean views. The dining room follows suit, pairing the Rosewood’s signature vistas with line-caught seafood, locally foraged herbs and produce from nearby farms.

Days can start with a round on the 18-hole golf course or a guided hike through native bush, then shift to a helicopter ride along the rugged coastline. The spa leans on local traditions with hot stone therapies and ocean-view lounges, offering quiet moments to decompress within earshot of the sea.

Our Inspector's Highlights

  • The David Harman-designed golf course is a major draw for players around the globe. Its simple layout works with the landscape to spectacular effect — the natural ebb and flow of the foothills present more challenges than you might expect.
  • Dinner and breakfast are included in your stay, the latter best enjoyed on the breezy veranda. Evening meals feature premium New Zealand bounty (don’t miss the lamb) paired with locally bottled wines.
  • Adventure options include guided hikes through native bush, helicopter rides along the coastline and private surf or fishing excursions, all tailored to your experience level.
  • Like the golf course, the Spa at Rosewood Kauri Cilffs is seamlessly integrated into its surroundings; the outdoor relaxation lounge is tucked among the Totara forest’s tropical foliage and the infinity pool stretches straight out to the horizon.
  • Rosewood Kauri Cliffs grants access to three unique stretches of sand: Little Takou Bay, Pink Beach and Waiaua Bay. Thanks to the resort’s secluded address, you’re likely to have at least one of these beaches all to yourself during your stay.

The Rooms

  • The 22 suites and villas are spread across the cliffside, each with a private deck or terrace that feels impossibly close to the ocean, perfect for sunrise views over the Pacific.
  • Interiors combine New Zealand timbers, stone and local fabrics with sleek, modern lines. Details like wool throws from Peter O’Brien Textiles and hand-carved wooden bowls add an artisanal touch.
  • Thoughtful extras include binoculars for whale spotting, Nespresso machines, bespoke stationery and curated local reading material.
  • Several standout villas feature outdoor soaking tubs or plunge pools tucked behind foliage for complete privacy, wood-burning fireplaces and sweeping panoramas of both the coastline and native kauri forest.
  • Even bathrooms put the vistas front and center, with a galley-like layout flanked by two vanities. The design draws your eye to the main event: a deep-soaking tub set beneath a large picture window overlooking the rugged landscape.
