The Times Square EDITION

A cool hideaway in Times Square
VERIFIED LUXURY

Amid gigantic, flashy billboards in the center of Times Square, The Times Square EDITION hides in plain sight. The 42-story hotel — the brand’s second New York outpost (the other is at Madison Avenue and East 24th Street) — brings a needed dose of modern luxury to the tourist-laden neighborhood. Where Times Square is bright, loud and busy, this hotel is serene, with rooms done up entirely in white and two terraces bursting with greenery.

The Times Square EDITION has 452 guest rooms and suites; restaurants 701West and The Terrace and Outdoor Gardens, from lauded NYC chef John Fraser; a 1,200-square-foot Lobby Bar; and a fitness center with a terrace. And, because this is project from Ian Schrager, who was a nightlife impresario before moving into hotels, there’s Paradise Club, a dinner theater and nightclub partnering with House of Yes, an avant-garde performance space in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.

The result of all this is a downtown-cool hotel with an intimate vibe smack-dab in buzzing Times Square.

Our Inspector's Highlights

  • Two lobbies — one at ground level with a glowing green orb prime for selfies and a tinkling piano concerto in the background, and another on the 10th floor, flanked by two walls of faux plants — transport you from the hubbub of Times Square to the serenity of the hotel.
  • In the bathrooms are custom Le Labo bath products in a black tea and bergamot scent, part of an exclusive collaboration with EDITION.
  • Nearly everything in the minibar is from an independent producer in the United States — think Brooklyn-made granola and Hawaiian cold brew — and caters to a variety of diets (vegan, gluten-free, paleo, low sugar, etc.).
  • The terraces on the ninth and 10th floors, wrapped in evergreens and planted with boxwoods, are intimate green hideaways overlooking Times Square.
  • Paradise Club provides entertainment four nights a week. Catch everything from cabaret-style performances to music from the likes of Questlove.

Things to Know

  • A stone’s throw from the offices of several multinational corporations has made the Times Square hotel popular with business travelers; you’ll see lots of suits at breakfast.
  • Adjoining king and double double rooms (with two double beds) are ideal for those traveling with kids and who still want to stay somewhere trendy.
  • Take in great views of the city from the high-ceilinged, 24-hour gym.

The Rooms

  • Outside in Times Square everything is a rainbow of neon, but within the minimalist rooms, all is white and off-white, the better to create a placid place to sleep.
  • A photo from Andy Warhol’s Factory —which was also on 47th Street, less than a mile east of the luxury hotel — hangs in all accommodations.
  • Each room has a 49-inch flat-screen TV, a Beats Bluetooth speaker, a minibar stocked with local treats like granola and spiced nuts made in Brooklyn and 24-hour room service.
  • Rooms come with a rainforest shower in the natural stone bathroom, while suites feature a sleek deep-soaking tub.

The Restaurants

  • The menus at 701West and The Terrace and Outdoor Gardens were developed by regarded NYC chef John Fraser (of The Loyal and Nix).
  • 701West serves a three-course prix fixe dinner in its 50-seat dining room, with dishes like poached halibut with olives, fennel and a saffron broth, or a poached hen’s egg with artichokes and Parmesan.
  • The Terrace and Outdoor Gardens is the more casual all-day restaurant, serving fare like a lobster roll with avocado or rye fried chicken with a radish salad.
  • A testament to Schrager’s star power and the pull of EDITION’s cool brand, New Yorkers brave crowded Times Square to sit on the hotel’s terrace for a tipple, like the warm-weather Gin Game, with Falernum (a Caribbean liqueur), cucumber and absinthe.
  • The white monochromatic Lobby Bar slings cocktails like Dual Citizenship (mezcal, pineapple, toasted coconut, roasted espresso bean) and Code of Silence (cognac, cold brew liqueur, absinthe, cacao bitters), alongside wine spritzes, such as Kooler Kids (basil, lemon, aloe vera and gentian).
