The Mark

A bold Manhattan beauty
VERIFIED LUXURY

Boasting a lobby with bold black-and-white marble floors, plush velvet settees and a signature custom scent from master perfumer Frédéric Malle, plus guest rooms offering the comfort and elegance of an uptown pied-à-terre, The Mark is one of New York’s chicest retreats, having been decorated top-to-bottom by French designer Jacques Grange.

In the heart of the Upper East Side and steps from Madison Avenue shopping and museums like The Whitney, the hotel serves as an ideal base for discovering Uptown Manhattan and displays a unique, boutique vibe, perfect for the fashion-forward set. After all, The Mark is the favored hotel of Met Gala attendees.

Yet there’s plenty to explore in the hotel itself, including dining at Jean-Georges Vongerichten's The Mark Restaurant, reserving a table at New York’s first Caviar Kaspia, booking a hair appointment at the esteemed Frédéric Fekkai salon, or indulging in a bit of bubbly at the '60s-inspired Mark Bar, a space outfitted with twinkling lights and playful furniture by Vladimir Kagan.

Our Inspector's Highlights
  • The Mark’s interiors — both in the guest rooms and the public spaces — blend classic elegance with modern art, seen in details such as the eye-catching, sculptural pendant lobby light fixture, the hotel’s signature pop of orange set against black-and-white tiles and the bar’s cowhide-patterned couches. The result is delightfully whimsical and impeccably stylish.

  • The hotel’s concierges are well-informed about New York’s top restaurants and boutiques, and will happily assist you with whatever you need, be it a personal shopper or dinner reservation.

  • Jean-Georges Vongerichten’s restaurant, located on the ground floor of the luxury New York hotel, offers seasonal American cuisine in a stunning setting.

  • The hotel offers guests exceptionally curated, only-in-New York experiences from private, after-hours tours at the Met, a spot aboard the Mark Sailboat for a sunset cruise in New York Harbor to a picnic setup in Central Park, complete with provisions from Jean-Georges, an umbrella and easy chairs in The Mark’s signature black-and-white stripes.

  • The Mark is a neighborhood institution and you feel the warmth instantly. Locals swing by the hotel’s iconic sidewalk Jean-Georges Haute Dog cart. Doormen greet passersby by name.

Things to Know
  • The Mark’s thoughtful amenities include complimentary shoeshines at the John Lobb Kiosk, custom-designed bicycles and Maclaren strollers for families.

  • Friendly attendants staff the gym at The Mark. They’ll help tailor your workout or stretch you out after a run on the treadmill. You can also take your workout outdoors, with a private session with a trainer in the hotel’s Central Park backyard.

  • If you have a dog, the luxury hotel sets up a little pet area in your room, complete with a plush bed for your pooch, food and water bowls and treats.

  • There is neither a pool nor sauna facilities at The Mark. However, the concierge will happily arrange spa visits, and the hotel does boast a salon from one of New York's top stylists, Frédéric Fekkai, with services everything from haircuts to makeup application.

  • The hotel is delightfully situated near some of the city's top attractions. Museum Mile (which includes The Guggenheim and The Met), Central Park and Madison Avenue shopping aren’t far from your room.

The Rooms
  • Guest rooms at The Mark are designed by Jacques Grange and are a calming blend of classic and Art Deco design, accented with modern art.

  • Rooms at this hotel have been fashioned with a cream color palette, featuring pale cabinetry with dark wood trim throughout, plus lighter-colored wood desks and side tables.

  • Textured fabric wallpaper in hues of creamy tan, pear-green drapes and attractive crown molding create an ambiance of classic elegance reflective of the hotel’s Upper East Side neighborhood.

  • The spacious, Art Deco-style, black-and-white marble bathrooms come equipped with pale green cabinetry, double sinks, towel warmers and in-mirror television consoles, while tub and shower fixtures are accented with stylish nickel fixtures from Lefroy Brooks.

  • Many of the hotel’s 46 suites boast working kitchens outfitted with granite countertops, full-size Sub-Zero refrigerators, Gaggenau ranges and Miele ovens.

The Restaurants
  • Helmed by chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten, The Mark Restaurant by Jean-Georges remains the key dining spot in The Mark, open for breakfast, brunch, lunch and dinner. You can also get anything off the menu delivered to your room, or, if you’re craving an informal bite during the day, head to the Mark Bar.

  • Choose to sit in the moody lounge area by the bar, or go a little more upscale in the dining room beneath the glass-paned atrium, where the tables get clothed, booths are dressed in velvet, and dark wooden chairs are upholstered in a burnt orange fabric.

  • Either way, both spots offer fine-dining service and the same market-driven, seasonal food with French flair. Think crispy octopus with fennel herb salad, parmesan crusted chicken with artichokes or grilled black sea bass with Cerignola olives.

  • Come summer, on the sidewalk, you’ll find The Mark’s elevated take on a New England lobster shack created in collaboration by Jean-Georges and Caviar Kaspia. In winter, the space transforms into a cozy, Swiss-inspired chalet.

  • Paris’ Caviar Kaspia opened its first New York location at The Mark. The restaurant celebrates the “art of caviar” through a menu that includes the cult favorite twice-baked potato topped with caviar, blinis with smoked salmon, vegetarian caviar made from liquified and spherized truffle, and much more.
