ITC Maratha, A Luxury Collection Hotel, Mumbai

An art-filled escape in Mumbai
VERIFIED LUXURY

Sitting in the busy Andheri neighborhood and just a mile from the airport, ITC Maratha, a Luxury Collection Hotel, Mumbai recalls the glorious Maratha dynasty of Maharashtra.

As you enter, the first thing you notice is the domed roof, which can be spotted from miles away. Then you’ll discover other touches, like elaborate stone carvings and Victorian interiors laced with indigenous art and plush furnishings. But there’s much to see here. Every floor sets a different tone with its art — one level flaunts Ajanta frescoes while another displays Chitrakatha drawings. Stroll the Peshwa Pavilion, a bright atrium with a skylight ceiling, towering palms and oriel windows framed by Rajasthan-style stone screens.

Even though you could spend all of your time wandering the halls, break away to explore the manicured grounds.

Our Inspector's Highlights

  • The Mumbai hotel embraces the heritage of the Maratha culture. Witness its roots in the grand Indo-Saracenic (a synthesis of Muslim and Indian design developed by British architects in the late 19th century) architecture.
  • We want to linger at a marble table in the airy Peshwa Pavilion with a glass of chai. And it isn’t an issue, since the restaurant is open 24 hours.
  • To unwind, head up to the 11th floor, where a pride of stone lions shoot water into the alluring oval outdoor pool.
  • Peruse the vast art showcased all across the hotel. Walls are adorned with everything from Warli tribal art to Paithani silk (the regional material also is used for the staff’s saris).
  • The 6,500-square-foot Kaya Kalp – The Spa uses local food for its rejuvenating services. Exfoliate with a pomegranate-sugar scrub, basmati rice and essential oils, or mung bean.

Things to Know

  • Women traveling by themselves may want to consider booking an Eva room, which comes with extra security measures, like a dedicated female butler and the ability to monitor who is at the door.
  • The luxury hotel does get packed during winters, so booking ahead of time is certainly recommended.

The Rooms

  • If you’re in town on business, snag an ITC One room. The accommodations are more conducive to work (there’s an ample desk), and you get onetime use of the 24-hour boardrooms for up to three hours.
  • Tower accommodations afford elevated perks, like butler service, lounge access and higher floors.
  • Chhatrapati Shivaji, a ruler from the dynasty that founded the Maratha Empire, inspired the Grand Presidential Suite. The 2,590-square-foot suite carries portraits of the warrior leader, Paithani silks and more luxe details.
  • ITC, an eco-friendly brand, banished single-use plastics in its hotels, so you won’t find any in the room. Everything from the bath products to the water bottles is recyclable.

The Restaurants

  • If you crave Asian food, head over to Pan Asian for hand-pulled noodles, jumbo prawns and scrumptious dim sum.
  • Peshawri is the most noteworthy restaurant at ITC. Focusing on rustic northwestern food from India, Peshawri encourages you to eat with your hands instead of cutlery, so utilize all your senses for a heavy, spice-laden meal. Don’t miss the dal bukhara (black lentils slow-cooked in a tomato gravy), sikandari raan (spiced lamb) and kebabs.
  • For a South Indian experience, try Dakshin Coastal. Sample dishes like appam (lace-like pancakes of fermented rice batter) and battani masala (peas, onions, tomatoes, red chilies and coconut) to savor the richness of southern-style cooking.
