The Carlton, a Rocco Forte hotel

A fashionable Milanese escape
VERIFIED LUXURY
Set just off Via della Spiga, in the hushed heart of Milan’s fashion quadrilateral, The Carlton, a Rocco Forte hotel is la dolce vita, refined and distilled. Long a Milanese landmark, the Rocco Forte brand has thoughtfully reimagined the luxury hotel as a private city retreat with effortlessness, elegance and unmistakably Milan energy. With just 71 accommodations (42 guest rooms and 29 suites), discretion trumps grandiosity, positioning The Carlton as a natural hub for those who move the city’s creative needle but know where to go to get out of the paparazzi’s sight.

The redesign by visionaries Olga Polizzi, Paolo Moschino and Philip Vergeylen brings light, texture and a collector’s sensibility to the historic shell with custom design pieces, soft leather accents and warm marble surfaces that create interiors that feel layered rather than styled. Suites open onto terraces above Via della Spiga or frame Milan’s rooftops, offering rare privacy in the city’s most coveted neighborhood.

During Milan Fashion Week and Salone del Mobile, The Carlton is set to be the spot for designers, editors and insiders who prefer calm over chaos. Entirely Milanese in spirit with its design-forward flair and resolutely private nature, The Carlton is less about the journey and more about the destination.

Our Inspector's Highlights

  • The Carlton’s glow-up by Rocco Forte Hotels is pure Milanese magic. Designers Polizzi, Moschino and Vergeylen pull off a chic sleight of hand: hand-painted wallpapers, gleaming marble and buttery leathers that look like they belong in a Bottega ad. The design is less hotel, more collector’s home — refined, radiant, and refreshingly un-themed.
  • The 1,216-square-foot Carlton Presidential Suite spans the building with a terrace floating above Via della Spiga. If you prefer something a little more Duomo-adjacent, the Galleria Suite’s twin terraces are a love letter to the city’s skyline. Additionally, all suites come with Irene Forte amenities, in-suite check-in and enough room to unpack your fashion haul.
  • Tucked away like Milan’s best finds, the Irene Forte Spa delivers facials with microcurrents, radio frequencies and other beautifully buzzy touches. The three-treatment-room sanctuary presents a welcome reset button after a day of showroom-hopping.
  • The Carlton’s dining duo captures Milan’s flair for the dramatic and the stylish. Caffè Floretta is your chic morning ritual, set in a lush glasshouse where sunlight plays across botanical prints and carbonara omelets. Come for the light, linger for the calm. Once nightfall hits, Spiga delivers a velvet-clad throwback to 1970s Milan, with Pierantonio Verga’s art on the walls and executive chef Fulvio Pierangelini’s Italian dishes at your table.
  • The Carlton Bar is a hot spot. With a design inspiration from Milan’s ’60s to ’80s creative scene, the atmosphere is sophisticated, seductive and mischievous. Behind the bar, legendary mixologist Salvatore “The Maestro” Calabrese channels the city’s golden era with a lineup that’s part aperitivo, part cinematic nostalgia. Expect martini-inspired sorbet and try the red prawn tartare on crispy rice.

Things to Know

  • The Carlton slips you straight onto Via della Spiga through a discreet private entrance — no velvet rope, just pure Milanese chic. This is the city’s most elegant, whisper-quiet shopping street, where fashion insiders stroll between ateliers and concept stores. Several suites and terraces overlook this iconic stretch, making for a very fashionable wake-up call.
  • This is more than a fashionista destination. It’s an insider location in the heart of Milan’s fashion quadrilateral that’s also steps from La Scala, the Duomo and Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II. A quick stroll to design galleries, concept stores, and cultural icons also awaits.
  • A subtle but distinctive perfume crafted by Roman perfumery Campomarzio70 infuses the hotel’s spaces with a sense of refinement. If you’d like to take the bespoke scent with you, find a bottle at the perfumery’s Via Brera boutique.
  • For longer stays, the Rocco Forte House (with 11 luxury apartments) is on nearby Via Manzoni and offers residential comfort and discretion.
