One&Only Le Saint Géran

A reborn Mauritius style icon
VERIFIED LUXURY

One&Only Le Saint Géran lies in 60 acres of tropical gardens on a sheltered and secluded peninsula fringed by more than a mile of powder-white sand. Founded by South African hotel tycoon Sol Kerzner, it was named after the ship Le Saint Géran, which sank off this coast and inspired 18th-century French romance novel Paul and Virginie.

The first resort hotel in the exclusive One&Only collection, this 142-room grande dame unveiled a $55 million transformation in December 2017. Its iconic colonial-style architecture received an understated contemporary facelift while newly designed structures draw inspiration from the island’s original sugar cane factories and plantation houses.

The reimagined Le Saint Géran encourages you to seek out adventure. In addition to abundant water sports, diving and deep-sea fishing trips, you can explore offshore islands or meander through tranquil fishing villages on one of the resort’s electric bikes.

And when you need some time to yourself, a brand-new Kids Only club and One Tribe teen center ensure that even the tiniest travelers can get a taste of the good life.

Our Inspector's Highlights

  • It doesn’t get much better than a scenic walk along One&Only Le Saint Géran’s re-sanded and extended beach. Take in an array of island vistas as you stroll along the white sands, from azure waters and coral reefs to atmospheric mountains.
  • With plush sofas and floor-to-ceiling windows to maximize sea views, La Carré Lounge is the place to go when it’s raining, or when you just need a break from those tropical rays. Perched above La Terrasse, the second-floor living room offers board games, complimentary tea and coffee, and Mauritian rum tasting sessions.
  • The culinary offerings at the Mauritius hotel are led by French executive chef Marc de Passorio. From theatrical Asian tapas at Tapasake to modern steakhouse fare in a 16th-century chapel at Prime, the cuisine at this island property is anything but ordinary.
  • Head for the luxury resort’s boathouse to enjoy some fun in the sun with complimentary activities, like paddle boarding, kayaking, windsurfing and snorkeling in a sheltered private lagoon.
  • Keep fit at the new fitness center, Club One, with unique offerings like aerial yoga classes, MyEquilibria outdoor workout sessions (think grown-up jungle gym — a first for the Indian Ocean region) and the island’s only padel (a cross between tennis and squash) court.

Things to Know

  • For a one-of-a-kind experience, hop on a Harley-Davidson to ride past sugar fields and forests with hotel general manager Charles de Foucault, stopping for a local Phoenix beer at a rustic shack.

  • Feel like royalty during a private cruise on Lady Lisbeth, a vintage boat built for Queen Elizabeth II. This serene sail includes an onboard massage, a castaway-style champagne picnic on a deserted beach and snorkeling in the turquoise waters.

The Rooms

  • The142 remodeled guest rooms and suites bring the outside in with nature-inspired splashes of tropical green, sand yellow and ocean blue. Some accommodations also feature a moveable, hand-painted screen between the bed and bathroom that allows for sea views from the tub.
  • Great for groups are the spacious (2,100-plus square feet) new two- and three-bedroom suites, with indoor/outdoor living space (furnished terraces and decks), butler service and beachside cabanas.
  • Spacious and hidden away, Villa One is one of the island’s most exclusive addresses, with a private infinity pool, full kitchen, a dedicated butler, valet and chef. In addition to breathtaking ocean views, the space is adorned with striking custom-made pieces, including flower-like ceramic wall plates created by Mauritian artist Hélène de Senneville.
  • Roughly 50 secluded pool villas for purchase and rental are being built, scheduled for completion in 2019.

The Restaurants

  • Breakfast, lunch and dinner are theatrical, interactive affairs at alfresco restaurant La Terrasse. Envisioned in the style of a pergola found in plantation houses, the open-air dining room serves up an array of international plates, including spicy Creole cuisine, fresh pizza and French fare.
  • Grab a casual lunch at La Pointe at the tip of the peninsula, where chargrilled catch of the day arrives with a chilled bottle of rosé on the terrace, and a wood-fired pizza can be enjoyed with your toes in the sand.
  • Popular upscale steakhouse Prime reflects a contemporary vibe. Select a glass from an impressive wine list to accompany a charcuterie board, or head for the new walk-in tasting table to cut through the formality.
  • Dinner is a multi-sensory experience at Tapasake, where a DJ plays at sundown and a sensual lantern-lit walkway leads you to the thatched-roof restaurant perched on stilts over the lagoon. SavorAsian-influenced small plates, such as king crab with Japanese lemon and soya bean paste, and wagyu beef cooked in eucalyptus leaf with pumpkin purée, paired well with chef-curated cocktails.
  • Don’t worry about missing your morning omelet if you choose to sleep in. The glass-sided upscale bakery L’Artisan turns out breakfast and barista-poured coffee all day long.
