Barceló Fortina Malta

Contemporary design meets Valletta views
VERIFIED LUXURY
From its perch on Sliema’s waterfront, Barceló Fortina Malta has an immediate sense of place: Valletta’s limestone walls rise across the harbor, creating a backdrop that follows you from the outdoor pool to many of the hotel’s 183 rooms and suites.

The interiors take a contemporary approach, pairing neutral tones with touches of Maltese stone. Outside, the pool and adjoining Manta Lido create the hotel’s more energetic hub, while Ina Spa offers a quieter retreat with an adults-only heated indoor pool, sauna and treatment rooms.

At Stella’s, breakfast and dinner center on local and international flavors, and The Bridge Bar is the spot for a drink or light bite. The luxury hotel’s location makes it particularly convenient for sightseeing, too. The Sliema ferry terminal is a short walk away, putting Valletta within easy reach while staying removed from the bustle of the historic center.

Our Inspector's Highlights

  • Arrival at Barceló Fortina Malta sets a polished tone without feeling overly formal. The bright reception area pairs large halo lights with living green walls and a floral display, while a glass of sparkling wine is offered during check-in.
  • Breakfast feels more intimate than the hotel’s size might suggest. The bright dining room has varied seating and table service for hot drinks, while the buffet includes Maltese specialties such as pastizzi (a savory pastry) and gbejniet (small round cheese) alongside a made-to-order egg station.
  • A private underground passage connects the main hotel to the harborside spa, gym and indoor pool, allowing you to move between the two without going outside — particularly convenient when heading over in a robe.
  • The outdoor pool has a distinctly social, upscale beach-club atmosphere. Manta Lido combines padded loungers and harbor views with a restaurant and seasonal DJ programming, while hotel guests can reserve sunbeds rather than compete for space with day visitors.
  • Barceló Fortina Malta’s waterfront location means that just steps from your front door, you can enter the sea from the rocky shoreline or walk to the nearby boat departures for harbor cruises and excursions to Comino and Gozo.

The Rooms

  • The 183 rooms and suites have a contemporary, neutral design, with dark wood accents and balconies or terraces across the categories. The look is polished and restrained, letting the harbor views take the visual lead.
  • The view is the biggest differentiator between room categories. Superior rooms can face the city or offer a partial sea view, while the sea-front and higher-tier rooms look across the harbor toward Valletta.
  • Balconies give the rooms useful outdoor space, although their size and furnishings vary. For more alfresco square footage, opt for a sea-view room.
  • The bathrooms continue the rooms’ contemporary aesthetic, with large-format gray stone tiles, dark vanities, integrated lighting and matte fixtures. Higher-category accommodations add deep soaking tubs alongside glass-enclosed rain showers.
  • The suites add more indulgences, with select accommodations offering private pools or outdoor hot tubs. The Spa Suite has its own sauna, while the sea-front Junior Suite includes its own hot tub.
