InterContinental Los Angeles Downtown

L.A.'s hotel in the sky
VERIFIED LUXURY

When the soaring 73-floor glass tower of InterContinental Downtown Los Angeles welcomed guests in 2017, the hotel set new records — it’s the tallest building on the West Coast and the largest InterContinental property in the Americas.

With its impressive stature, the 1,100-foot-tall skyscraper dazzles with 360-degree views of the City of Angels. But there’s so much more than meets the eye at this designer downtown stay.

Perks abound on nearly every floor. Join a yoga class at the seventh-floor gym, then grab a sunset drink at the poolside No Dive Bar. Conduct business at the 70th-floor Club InterContinental before savoring dinner with friends at La Boucherie steakhouse on the 71st level.

No matter how you spend your day, be sure to end your night with light SoCal breezes and DJ-spun tunes at Spire 73, the highest outdoor lounge in the Western Hemisphere.

Our Inspector's Highlights

  • Every detail of InterContinental Downtown Los Angeles, from the event spaces and rooms to the lobby and lounges, plays up the hotel’s most striking amenity: the views. These stunning vistas, depending on where you’re located in the hotel, stretch from Catalina Island to the Hollywood sign and beyond.
  • Taking inspiration from the city, InterContinental DTLA’s design reflects local culture, especially L.A.’s notorious traffic. Make sure to look up at the three-story chandelier made of car brake lights at check-in or the billboard-inspired décor in your room.
  • With its black and red interior and epic cityscapes, Attitude Fitness — the hotel’s sleek, state-of-the-art 24-hour gym — has such a cool factor that professional athletes and celebrities have been spotted working out here.
  • As the highest open-air bar in the Western Hemisphere, Spire 73 is a must-visit for a sophisticated sundowner or an unforgettable night out on the town. Regular whiskey tastings make this a top spot for brown spirits lovers, too.
  • It’s rare to find event space downtown that takes advantage of the city’s temperate weather. But the Los Angeles hotel makes the most of the views with indoor-outdoor venues that offer awe-inspiring scenery — ideal for photo ops.

Things to Know

  • When you arrive at street level, look for the elevator near the colorful, floor-to-ceiling art installation made of thousands of tiny figurines by Korean artist Do Ho Suh. Take the elevator to the 70th-floor Sky Lobby to check in.
  • It might sound odd, but don’t miss a stop at the bathrooms on the 71st floor. The women’s facilities take a cue from Marie Antoinette’s Versailles and the men’s has the best city view from a urinal.
  • Between the complimentary gourmet food and inspiring work spaces — including a conference room with top-to-bottom views — upgrading to an accommodation with Club InterContinental access is worth the splurge.
  • Spire 73, the open-air rooftop bar, becomes a high-energy lounge as the evening progresses. It’s open until 2 a.m. on Friday and Saturday, but because of the multiple floors between the lounge and guest rooms, you won’t be disturbed by the music.
  • The luxury hotel is in the heart of downtown Los Angeles near Staples Center, the Grammy Museum and L.A. Live. Each of these attractions is roughly a 10-minute walk away.

The Rooms

  • No need to request a room with great views — they all have a wall of windows.
  • All 889 rooms are decorated in soothing neutral tones with pops of color from throw pillows, chaise lounges and L.A.-inspired modern art.
  • Tubs with city vistas are available in a few select rooms. Even if you can’t snag one with a panorama, you can still enjoy a soak — every accommodation boasts a separate shower and bathtub stocked with Le Labo products.
  • For the ultimate downtown pied-à-terre, book the expansive 2,500-square-foot Presidential Suite. In addition to sweeping skyline vistas, the accommodation comes with a dining room, kitchen, piano, walk-in closets and a soaking tub with a view.

The Restaurants

  • A flavorful addition to the L.A. landscape, La Boucherie is an elegant French-meets-American steakhouse. The wine list is immense (1,200 bottles of French and California varietals) to pair with indulgent dishes like signature wagyu steaks and elaborate cheese selections.
  • For a special occasion dinner, reserve one of the three VIP Starlight Booths at La Boucherie. Private from the rest of the restaurant, these coveted spots provide an intimate experience, including an exclusive tasting menu with optional reserve wine pairings.
  • The 70th-floor Lobby Lounge serves light bites, along with locally inspired cocktails, such as the Pasadena Rose and the Downtown Sunrise. Those really looking to start their night off with a bang will want to order one of the Lobby Lounge’s Early Flights — the First Class tequila flight features five shooters of top-shelf pours.
  • A slice of Americana can be had at Dekkadance, an upscale take on the classic hotel buffet. Dinner showcases poke and ceviche, cheese and charcuterie, a carving station and oven-fired pizzas, while the Sparkling Sunday Brunch Buffet shines with bottomless mimosas, bellinis and kir royals.
  • Spire 73 may be a trendy rooftop bar, but the food is a highlight here, too. Try the larger-than-life Spire Burger (topped with a stack of onion rings) or go for Tableside S’mores to enjoy your own mini marshmallow roast.
