Southern Ocean Lodge

An iconic nature retreat
VERIFIED LUXURY
After devastating bushfires razed one of Australia’s most iconic luxury properties, Southern Ocean Lodge is back and better than ever.

Set on Kangaroo Island, just off the mainland of South Australia and a 40-minute flight from Adelaide, 25 design-forward villas welcome guests following a $50 million re-envisioning in 2023.

Beyond the plush facilities, Southern Ocean Lodge also allows you to experience rugged and remote Australia with native birds, kangaroos and humpback whales as daily guests. You can find adventure on the clifftops of Cape Younghusband or simply relax in the hotel’s newly designed wellness area with a state-of-the-art fitness center and sauna.

Gastronomes will love the freshly caught ingredients and seasonal menu prepared by the culinary team. There is also an expansive wine cellar, which includes world-class South Australian options from the state’s premier wine region, the Barossa Valley.

Our Inspector's Highlights

  • The exquisitely designed suites by Australian architect Max Pritchard Gunner set the bar high for other luxury properties in the country. With its floor-to-ceiling windows, cliff-curbed construction and locally commissioned furnishings, Southern Ocean Lodge is more than just a hotel but a destination.
  • The property’s wellness center consists of three treatment rooms, state-of-the-art fitness equipment, a sauna and temperature-controlled hot and cold plunge pools. If you’d rather indulge in privacy, suites have a plunge pool or horizon-edge pool to enjoy.
  • Dining at Southern Ocean Lodge is a sensory explosion. Here you can enjoy a bounty of fresh ingredients caught, foraged and grown directly outside of the property. Menus are produce-driven and seasonal so expect sweet marron (crayfish) and native ingredients like juniper and finger lime when the calendar agrees.
  • Every suite includes a complimentary bar consisting of local beers and wines, snacks and juices. Should you need something a little stronger, the Great Room’s open bar always welcomes guests. Locally produced wines from the Barossa Valley are a highlight at the lodge as well as handcrafted beer — an Aussie must.
  • Take time to explore the art and architecture of the lodge, which showcases commissioned works from local artists. Janine Mackintosh’s Nature’s Mandalas can be found in the Southern Spa while the late Indiana James’ wildlife pieces erected from reclaimed metal are proudly displayed in the Great Room.

Things to Know

  • As guests of Southern Ocean Lodge, complimentary guided tours and other experiences are included in the stay. One of the highlights is a visit to Flinders Chase National Park, a wild and rugged wilderness where seals frolic and sunbathe near Admirals Arch.
  • Sustainability is at the core to the lodge’s new design. The property relies on solar energy and reduces diesel fuel consumption by more than 50%. Rainsavers were installed to increase rainwater harvesting. The team is also clearing coastal mallee and replanting fire-retardant succulents to prevent future natural disasters.
  • There are multiple ways to get to Kangaroo Island. You can enjoy complimentary transfers from Adelaide airport, arrange a private transfer from Kangaroo Island Airport or simply take a picturesque ferry ride from Cape Jervis to the mainland.
  • While accommodations are filled with rain showers, terraces and fireplaces, there are no televisions in the suites, keeping your focus on the breathtaking scenery outside.
