Conrad Guangzhou

Understated elegance in the heart of Canton
VERIFIED LUXURY

Tesla Model X transfers, marble bathrooms, panoramic views, molecular Chinese dining — there’s little that Conrad Guangzhou leaves to be desired. In the heart of Guangzhou’s CBD (Central Business District) in the eastern Tianhe district, the modern 27-story tower sits beside the enormous IGC (International Grand City) mall.

Inside, a tranquil lobby with triple-height ceilings channels a Xiguan mansion (traditional in Guangzhou), while a striking 65-foot-high Czech crystal light installation wraps around a spiral staircase. Upstairs, understated sophistication sets the tone in the 309 rooms and suites. In every accommodation, you’ll find thoughtful details, including an automatic shoe dryer, energy-saving motion-sensor lights, free-standing tubs and pillow menus.

The Conrad is home to five restaurants and lounges — most of them imagined by acclaimed designer André Fu —an indoor pool, a whirlpool, a cocktail bar and a relaxing spa. If you manage to tear yourself away from your posh perch, the modern Tianhe district is well worth exploring. There’s a charming canal lined with two-story Chinese shophouses at the hotel’s doorstep, as well as some of the city’s top attractions just a short walk away.

Our Inspector's Highlights

  • The lobby and surrounding areas are a calming oasis in historic Guangzhou and an easy 10- to 15-minute stroll to major attractions, including the Pearl River (aka Zhujiang) promenade, Guangdong Museum and the avant-garde Guangzhou Opera House.
  • If you’re in need of sheer relaxation, visit Conrad Guangzhou’s spa and 25-meter-long heated indoor pool. While there, take a dip in the rooftop whirlpool.
  • The luxury hotel’s Chinese restaurant, Yun Pavilion, has interiors designed by Hong Kong-based talent André Fu alongside cutting-edge dishes made using molecular techniques. From liquid nitrogen ice cream to truffle foams, the inventive concept delivers photogenic dishes and nuanced flavors to match.
  • Bring your sneakers: you will want to lace up and hit the enormous gym and Precor equipment. Expect river views, ample cardio machines, a separate lifting zone and lots of equipment for yoga and stretching.
  • Shopaholics will appreciate the hotel’s location right next to the upscale IGC mall, which houses outposts from big names, such as Furla and Apple, a host of upscale restaurants and local refreshments like Heytea.

Things to Know

  • Most travelers visit Guangzhou via Hong Kong. The best way to reach the city is by taking the Guangzhou-Hong Kong Train, which departs from Hung Hom Railway Station and takes roughly two hours.
  • With few English-speaking staff, the Guangzhou train station can feel overwhelming to first timers. It’s easiest to arrange a private transfer through the Conrad.
  • Conrad Guangzhou’s concierge team is among the best in the business. Ask about the property’s handy “1/3/5” guide, which explains how best to spend one, three or five hours in the city — the staff can also provide personalized recommendations.
  • As few people speak English in Guangzhou, we’d recommend arming yourself with Chinese phrases and a list of your destinations for the day. The Conrad concierge can help with that.
  • The Guangzhou hotel resides in the middle of the city’s Central Business District (aka Zhujiang New Town district), where most offices, glassy skyscrapers and modern restaurants lie. For a more traditional experience, head west to the well-preserved Liwan district or Shamian Island — home to colonial-era architecture, towering banyan trees and quiet promenades.

The Rooms

  • Spacious and inviting, the rooms at Conrad Guangzhou start at a generous 527 square feet for an entry-level Twin Deluxe Room and stretch up to a palatial 2,647 square feet for the Presidential Suite.
  • The Presidential Suite also features a living area decked out with residential-style bookshelves and artwork, a dining room, a kitchenette, various TVs and Bang & Olufsen gadgets. And in the middle of the marble bathroom, there’s a jaw-dropping standalone tub that overlooks the Pearl River and the city’s sparkling skyline.
  • In deluxe rooms, a relaxing cream, gray and Conrad purple palette ensures the chaos of the city below is left behind at the door. Meanwhile, upper-level rooms add in a splash of blue and stunning white marble.
  • Whether you book a suite or a deluxe room, every accommodation includes a flexible work station with an ergonomic chair and international outlets.
  • The Executive Lounge on the 27th floor offers panoramic views of the river and spiraling Canton Tower, complimentary breakfast and cocktail hours. We recommend upgrading to an Executive Suite to enjoy access.

The Restaurants

  • Helmed by chef Tan Guohui, Yun Pavilion is known for its upscale dim sum and refined Cantonese cuisine. If you’re dining in a small party of two or three, we’d suggest ordering an assortment of sharing dishes — don’t miss the foie gras in blueberry and red wine sauce, Canadian scallops with truffle-infused cream sauce, and the darling deep-fried goose puff (which arrives in a traditional Chinese-style bird cage).
  • Mg bar is the place to go if you’re craving crisp bubbly, gin cocktails and live music — you can take it all in by the glowing purple bar, surrounded by gorgeous bronze lights and a funky glass bottle installation. For fresh air, head out to the terrace and admire the views.
  • Catch a Mediterranean breeze at Aroma, where fresh organic ingredients arrive in flavorful dips, seafood pastas, Iberian cold cuts, French oysters and abundant salads — it’s homestyle portions all around. Ask sommelier Alan Zhong to choose a wine to pair with these lively Spanish, French and Italian flavors.
  • For a little bit of everything, make a beeline to Sense, which offers a roaring all-day buffet overflowing with seafood, salad, fresh juices and Chinese dishes. If you’re looking for a lighter option, you can pare back by ordering from the à la carte menu.
  • Jewel-toned Gem will delight those with a penchant for quiet spaces and feminine design. Enjoy quick bites, coffee and afternoon tea in this scenic spot.
