VERIFIED LUXURY
Here are five things to know about us:
1. We verify luxury. Our highly trained inspectors visit every property we rate, evaluating based on up to 900 objective criteria. Our hotel stays span a minimum of two nights.
2. We pay our own way. No one can buy a rating; all ratings are earned through our objective inspection process.
3. Our global team of inspectors are anonymous at all times, so they have the same experience as a typical guest.
4. While we inspect both service and facility, our Star Rating system emphasizes service because your experience at a hotel, restaurant or spa goes beyond looks — how it makes you feel is what you will remember most.
5. We started in1958 as Mobil Travel Guide, and we created the original Five-Star rating system for hospitality.
Five-Star
These properties deliver an outstanding experience and consistently offer a highly customized level of service.
Four-Star
These are exceptional properties, offering high levels of service and quality of facility to match.
Recommended

Inn at Willow Grove is a beautiful, plantation-style estate set amid panoramic views of the Blue Ridge Mountains and unspoiled Central Virginia farmland. Walk up the carriage-friendly driveway, enter the stately Manor House and step into an era of mint juleps served from silver trays.
The hotel’s professionally certified butlers are backdropped by a modern art collection and designer rooms that speak to Fifth Avenue, not fading gentility.
Historic quarters dot the 40 acre property, including a carriage house and an 18th-century schoolhouse — the oldest in the county — lovingly renovated into one of six luxury guest cottages complete with Wi-Fi and breakfast-in-bed beignets.
Whether attending a destination wedding or getting away for some one-on-one time, this hotel oozes relaxation and romance.

Our Inspector's Highlights
- Pamper yourself at the smokehouse spa before strolling the manicured grounds or reading in the library, where you’ll discover a whimsical chair made from midcentury-modern hardbacks.
- Behind the soaring Jeffersonian-style columns, antique cabinetry and quaint sun porches lies all the amenities gamed in the pursuit of leisure.
- Whether you dig two-story boxwoods or autumnal orange leaves falling from a hundred-year-old chestnut tree, spring and fall are the times to visit Inn at Willow Grove. The foliage and flora are best viewed from of one of the many fire pits sprinkled about the grounds of the Charlottesville hotel.
- Plan your arrival for sunset so you can enjoy the amphibians’ serenade alfresco with a glass of wine from the pub’s extensive wine cellar.
- Museum-quality stained-glass windows and a brick fireplace in the central dining room at Vintage Restaurant tickle the senses, readying them for playful presentations, such as a “Philly cheesesteak” salad with local mushrooms.
Things to Know
- The Overlook cottage is dog friendly, with one of the prettiest vistas around.
- Look for the whimsical cow art scattered throughout the Charlottesville hotel.
- The Piedmont-style manor house and four of the six outbuildings at Inn at Willow Grove are on the National Register of Historic Places.
The Rooms
- The original 1778 Manor House, designed by Dolley Madison’s land surveyor, holds four guest rooms and two suites comfortably appointed with a mixture of antique and current décor.
- Recline on an organic Natura mattress, topped with Frette linens and goose-down bedding, while your butler fills the soaking tub and adjusts the temperature of the heated natural stone floors in the bathroom.
- Or stay in one of nine cottages on the grounds, most complete with wet bar, private sitting room, gas fireplace and balcony or patio for taking in the country air.
- All rooms come with turndown service that includes house-made sweets in the evening and French press coffee and beignets delivered fresh each morning.
The Restaurants
- The inn’s signature eatery, Vintage Restaurant, serves farm-to-fork fare in two settings: The casual pub buttresses an elegant bar with the best local and imported wines, beers and spirits, while the restaurant itself is a den of cozy and semi-formal dining rooms built for intimacy.
- Vintage Restaurant features regional American cuisine “with a twist” from menus that change regularly to showcase the freshest flavors of the seasons, sourced locally from Central Virginia’s farmland.
- The restaurant serves up lunch, dinner, gourmet Pub fare and a decadent Sunday Brunch, Gourmet Tapas Wednesdays and special menus for holidays.
- Vintage Restaurant enjoys a home at the garden level of the historic Manor House at Inn at Willow Grove. In addition to the Pub and main dining room, the restaurant features more intimate settings, including the Chef’s Table, the Sun Room, and The Hall.
