Old World Indian charm with South African luxury
VERIFIED LUXURY

Seamlessly blending Old World Indian charm with modern South African luxury, Taj Cape Town is a city-center stay teeming with sophistication.

Originally home to the South African Reserve Bank, the stately hotel is ideally located in the CBD (central business district), allowing you to experience all that Cape Town has to offer. The property is a short distance from the capital’s famous attractions, including Iziko South African National Gallery, Signal Hill and the lively Victoria & Alfred Waterfront.

When you’re done exploring the Castle of Good Hope or strolling along the harbor, opt for a bite at the popular and recently renovated Bombay Brasserie, Taj Cape Town’s authentic Indian restaurant, or settle in for Taj Afternoon Tea, served in the opulent setting of The Lobby Lounge. Then retreat to one of 176 elegantly decorated rooms, each affording views of the city or iconic Table Mountain.

Our Inspector's Highlights
  • Taj Cape Town sits in the heart of the capital. Its CBD location puts you within walking distance of many trendy restaurants, bars and galleries, not to mention myriad museums and historic sights.
  • While all the rooms are plush and elegantly decorated, the best accommodations have stunning vistas of Table Mountain. Order breakfast in to snap a spectacular sunrise shot.
  • The Cape Town hotel’s excellent Bombay Brasserie is helmed by French executive chef David Tilly and his team of five Indian toques. Dining at Bombay is more than a meal; it is an authentic journey of Indian cuisine, each mouthful of dal (lentils) and prawn curry a flavor explosion.
  • Jiva Spa draws on ancient Eastern wellness philosophies with the goal of aligning mind, body and soul through relaxation. Taking this ethos one step further, the spa ensures that all materials and products that touch the body are entirely natural — from the organic cotton sheets to the Atlantic sea salt scrubs — making for a more holistic experience.
  • Taj Cape Town’s conference and event facilities stand out in the restored former 19th-century bank building. The lavish Bank Hall, ideal for an elegant wedding, has opulent chandeliers, stately columns and double-height ceilings.
Things to Know
  • Leave your car with the valet (it’s complimentary) and choose instead to explore on foot or make use of gratis city and V&A Waterfront transfers.
  • Explore Cape Town in more detail with the hotel’s personalized City Walk Tour, discovering all the wonderful hidden gems like The Company’s Gardens. It’s complimentary for guests.
  • Squeeze in a workout at the fitness center, where you’ll find a 49-foot heated indoor lap pool, a full range of Technogym equipment and two saunas.
The Rooms

  • The 176 individually decorated guest rooms and suites have an elegant, contemporary feel.
  • Located in the historic Heritage wing, Taj Club Rooms are supremely sumptuous, offering extra-length king beds, high ceilings and spacious bathrooms stocked with Molton Brown products. Other perks include 24-hour butler service and access to the exclusive Club Lounge for complimentary breakfast and evening cocktails with canapés.
  • Those traveling with tots in tow should opt for a Tower Wing two-bedroom family suite to enjoy separate, spacious living rooms and a private balcony with stunning city views. Suites have an extra-length king bed in the main bedroom and twin beds in the second bedroom.
  • The 2,150-square-foot Presidential Suite is an Instagram-worthy dream, boasting a wrap-around terrace with uninterrupted views of both Table Mountain and Cape Town. Spanning the 16th and 17th floors of the luxury hotel, the two-bedroom accommodation’s extravagant extras include a fire pit, an exercise room and a private spa treatment room and hammam.

The Restaurants

  • Experience incredible Indian cuisine in fine-dining Bombay Brasserie. Dishes celebrate the exotic smells and flavors of the East, like ginger-spiced lamb chops or black lentils and red beans, simmered overnight.
  • Overlooking St Georges Mall, Mint Restaurant & Terrace focuses on relaxed, modern bistro-style dining. It’s great for cocktails and a light lunch before exploring the city. If you stop in for dinner, ask about weekly specials that show off the venue’s European (fish and chips is served on Fridays) and Indian (pop in for Curry Night on Tuesdays) inspiration.
  • The Lobby Lounge in the former banking hall is the epitome of opulence with grandiose marble columns and chandeliers. Enjoy a pre-dinner gin and tonic or a sweet treat with coffee or loose-leaf tea.
  • Start your day with a delicious breakfast at Mint Restaurant & Terrace, which includes both a buffet selection and an à la carte menu. The dishes are classic (brioche French toast, eggs Benedict) with the exception of the “Taj Specialties,” daily specials with an Indian flair.
