W Budapest

A splashy Budapest gem
VERIFIED LUXURY

Known for its seductive aesthetics and noteworthy nightlife, W Hotels made a splashy debut with W Budapest, its first Eastern European address. Opened in summer 2023, W Budapest breathes new life into the historic Drechsler Palace, all while keeping the building’s gorgeous neo-Gothic architecture intact.

Its location along upscale UNESCO-designated Andrássy Avenue makes the luxury hotel a prime choice for shopaholics and culture-seekers alike, but it's the dramatic Wes Anderson-like interiors that set this newly opened gem apart from the crowd. Cleverly designed spaces from the minds of London-based Bowler James Brindley and Hungarian firm Bánáti + Hartvig pay homage to Budapest’s storied past while maintaining a chic, contemporary vibe. A low-lit spa and trendy dining venues draw international jet setters and glitterati, while 151 uniquely decorated accommodations cater to a wide variety of tastes.

This is a place to see and be seen without sacrificing any luxurious comforts.

Our Inspector's Highlights

  • With its striking all-black interior, Greek mythology-themed murals, private DJ booth and floating fireplace, W Budapest’s Extreme Wow Suite is a show-stopper. The pièce de résistance of this accommodation is the private triple-tiered wet bar stocked with complimentary top-shelf spirits, complete with a dedicated bartender on call whenever the mood strikes.
  • An offshoot of restaurateur Riccardo Giraudi’s Beefbar concept, art deco-inspired Nightingale by Beefbar anchors the Budapest hotel’s culinary offerings. Look for a menu of trendy Asian-inspired small plates paired with a collection of creative cocktails best enjoyed in the convivial blue-hued dining room.
  • Head to the basement to discover W Budapest’s not-so-secret speakeasy. Society25's curated cocktail list draws inspiration from the stunning buildings erected during the city’s belle-époque era — try the spicy Museum of Applied Arts-themed Avant-Garde or the sparkling Drechsler Palace-influenced Délice Pêche.
  • The aptly named Away Spa soothes the senses with an array of luxurious treatments featuring locally sourced essential oils, but an ethereal aesthetic is the highlight here. The Hungarian bathhouse-inspired spa houses a hall of mirrors that, when paired with serene low lighting and tranquil water features, creates an intimate cocoon of relaxation.
  • The luxury hotel occupies a unique intersection of Budapest, where luxury meets authenticity. Shoppers can browse high-end boutiques along Andrássy Avenue or check out an array of local thrift shops, while the historic Jewish quarter lies just around the corner and the grandiose Opera House sits just across the street.

The Look

  • Designers paid homage to W Budapest’s history by restoring and re-creating the building’s original stained-glass windows and dramatic arched doorways. Combined with contemporary elements like sleek, modern furniture and brass accents, the result is a unique ode to the city.
  • Take note of the playful black-and-white pattern found throughout the property. The distinctive chessboard-inspired motif is an homage to Budapest’s long love affair with the game.
  • Subtle design details like curved lines, soft lighting and pale pink hues draw inspiration from Drechsler Palace’s past as the Hungarian State Ballet Academy. Bolder colors like emerald green and sapphire blue create a jewelry-box-like aesthetic that embraces Budapest’s opulent French Renaissance-style architecture.
  • Art deco decor adds a touch of Hollywood glamour à la Hungarian actor Zsa Zsa Gabor, while a heavy-handed use of mirrors creates an array of quirky optical illusions — a trick inspired by one of Hungary’s most famous exports, Harry Houdini.
  • W Budapest’s guest rooms are all works of art, but it's the suites that steal the show. Inspired by the lifestyle hotel’s dance heritage, the two top-tier suites boast stylish monochrome interiors in a dramatic ode to Swan Lake.
