Blancaneaux Lodge

An intimate jungle hideaway in Belize
VERIFIED LUXURY
Deep within the Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve of western Belize, Blancaneaux Lodge began life as the private family retreat of filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola. After restoring the abandoned property in the 1980s, Coppola eventually opened it to the public as an intimate 20-room eco-lodge, where dense jungle and shaded trails along the Privassion Creek provide a backdrop of near-complete seclusion.

Accommodations range from riverside cabanas to forested villas, with handcrafted furnishings, native hardwoods and colorful regional textiles. Rather than ostentatious extravagance, luxury here comes from immersion in nature, with ample open-air spaces that make you feel all the more connected to the rainforest.

Days are spent exploring the reserve, then cooling off under jungle waterfalls (or in the infinity-edge pool). In the restaurants, produce from the luxury hotel's own gardens appears in everything from Italian classics inspired by the Coppola family’s heritage to Central American dishes, creating a culinary program that feels as personal as the property itself.

Our Inspector's Highlights

  • It’s easy to see why Coppola fell for this corner of Belize. The jungle reminded the filmmaker of the landscapes he visited while filming Apocalypse Now, and his cinematic sensibility still shapes the property today. Nowhere is that more evident than in the delightfully eclectic Jaguar Bar, where the ceiling fans were salvaged from the film’s set.
  • Despite its remote setting, Blancaneaux Lodge offers an impressive dining lineup, with three restaurants and a cocktail bar. Montagna is perhaps the biggest surprise: a tree-house-style restaurant specializing in authentic Italian cuisine, from wood-fired pizzas and housemade pastas to fresh fish and a few Coppola family recipes.
  • For something more local, the poolside Guatemaltecqua showcases traditional Mayan cuisine. Better still, book a communal dinner at Garden Spot, where a tour of the lodge's organic kitchen garden is followed by a three-course vegetarian feast made almost entirely from produce harvested onsite.
  • Unlike many luxury lodges where every activity comes with an extra charge, Blancaneaux includes an impressive selection of complimentary experiences in your stay. With guided birdwatching at sunrise, river tubing, hiking trails, bicycles, organic garden tours and sustainability walks, there's plenty to discover. There’s also no shortage unforgettable paid excursions, from horseback riding with its own onsite stables and farm-to-fork cooking classes to guided tours of ancient Mayan ruins.
  • The boutique hotel's eco credentials run deep. The Privassion Creek supplies around 85% of the lodge's electricity through an onsite hydroelectric system, while open-air architecture and natural airflow eliminate the need for air conditioning. Honeybees from the onsite apiary help sustain the surrounding forest and organic gardens, and the Coppola family's conservation efforts extend into the wider community through wildlife partnerships, educational scholarships and support for local environmental organizations.

The Rooms

  • Accommodations range from intimate cabanas for couples to larger one- and two-bedroom villas suited to families or longer stays. Across all categories, rooms feature handcrafted Belizean furnishings, hand-painted tile bathrooms and Guatemalan textiles and antiques selected by the Coppola family themselves.
  • Garden View Cabañas overlook lush tropical gardens and feature spacious screened-in porches with hammocks. They embody the lodge's philosophy of blurring the boundaries between indoors and out, with every room category designed to immerse guests in the surrounding rainforest.
  • Riverfront and Honeymoon Cabañas embrace the creekside setting, but the Honeymoon Cabañas are particularly special, located above a small waterfall with a private deck and a lower garden terrace furnished with loungers overlooking the water.
  • The Enchanted Cottage is made for those who prefer their wilderness experiences with a few extra comforts, offering a charming stone-walled abode with a fireplace, radiant floor heating, a traditional Japanese ofuro soaking tub, a kitchen with wine fridge and a private infinity pool — all tucked away in its own secluded corner of the rainforest.
  • Naturally, the Belize hotel's most impressive accommodation is named for the man himself. Francis Ford Coppola's Villa is a sprawling two-bedroom retreat perched above the river, pairing an infinity pool, multi-level deck, kitchen and bathtub, with personal touches including the director's own art, antiques and family photographs throughout. It also comes with a dedicated attendant and one delightfully quirky feature: a “shellphone” intercom, fashioned from seashells, that guests use to call the front desk.
