Fairmont Gold at Banff Springs

An elegant Canadian Rockies hotel-within-a-hotel
VERIFIED LUXURY

Dubbed the “Castle in the Rockies” when it opened in 1888 as the first of Canada’s fashionable railway hotels, Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel has long been a top choice for visitors to this Rocky Mountain region. A short drive from Banff’s town center, this Canadian Rockies resort keeps you entertained with expansive spa and fitness facilities, multiple lounges and restaurants, a striking 18-hole golf course underneath two peaks and a shorter nine-hole option, rejuvenating mineral pools and stunning mountain vistas. With a recent revamp of the property’s deluxe Gold rooms, suites and private lounge, you can now opt for Fairmont Gold at Banff Springs, an elegant and more personalized “hotel within a hotel” at this venerable lodging.

On arrival, Gold guests enter through a separate courtyard to a private check-in area, bypassing the lobby and its often-busy reception desks. A dedicated concierge staff working from the fifth-floor Gold lounge, where refreshments are available throughout the day, offers recommendations and book excursions, helping you plan your time on the property and throughout Banff National Park just outside the hotel’s doors.

Our Inspector's Highlights

  • With just 110 rooms and suites on the fourth and fifth floors of this more than 700-room property, the Gold option provides a more boutique feel. You will avoid the crowds (and tour groups) who often frequent this historic property.
  • The Gold lounge serves complimentary hot breakfast, appetizers and desserts, along with coffee, espresso, soft drinks and the Fairmont’s custom teas. Gold guests can also opt for alcoholic drinks from the lounge’s honor bar.
  • With large fireplaces and views of the surrounding mountains, the Gold lounge is divided into separate spaces, one of which is a quiet area designed for work or reading that’s set apart from the main lounge.
  • Fairmont Banff Springs curates a series of customized experiences, from forest bathing to star-gazing tours. While not unique to Gold guests, the Gold concierge can arrange these and other distinctive ways to explore the Canadian Rockies region.
  • Among the hotel’s renovated signature suites is the 1,500-foot Crown Suite, located in the building’s tower and accessed by a private elevator. Formerly called the “Royal Suite” after its many titled guests, this two-bedroom unit offers prime views, with vistas across the mountains from several vantage points, including the deep soaker tub.

The Rooms

  • In the Gold rooms and suites, contemporary furnishings, vibrant color palettes and modern art infuse the heritage ambiance with a more au courant feel. Some units feature distinctive dressers, their front faces carved to echo the shape of the mountains.
  • As in many historic properties, room sizes — even among the Gold accommodations — can vary from compact to spacious, but many have expansive vistas of the surrounding mountains that make even the most petite accommodations (measuring 225 square feet) feel more commodious.
  • Finger-touch lighting, reading lamps embedded in the headboards, Bose sound systems and electrical outlets throughout the rooms are among the technological upgrades that keep this 19th-century castle current.
  • The bathrooms in the Gold rooms have granite counters, slate flooring, spray showers and eco-friendly dispensers of Fairmont’s signature Le Labo Rose 31 bath products.
