Hotel Jerome, Auberge Resorts Collection

A fresh take on the Old West
VERIFIED LUXURY

Built in 1889, Hotel Jerome, Auberge Resorts Collection has established itself as a luxury landmark in the heart of chic Aspen. The three-story brick structure, built during the height of the state’s silver boom, was the vision of Jerome B. Wheeler, whose intention was to emulate the great European hotels of the time.

The property pioneered new levels of innovation with the only elevator in town, and was one of the first buildings to have full electric lighting west of the Mississippi. During the 1950s, the hotel became a popular gathering spot for writers, artists and screen stars, including Gary Cooper, Lana Turner, Hedy LaMarr and John Wayne.

Today, the historic Hotel Jerome shines brighter than ever thanks to contemporary-meets-mountain interior design, stellar service and a slew of ski-season luxuries, namely a few fantastic outdoor Jacuzzis.

Our Inspector's Highlights

  • Centrally located on Main Street, the luxury hotel offers beautiful views of Aspen Mountain and close proximity to restaurants, nightlife and art galleries in the heart of town.
  • The lodging has gone through several renovations to maintain its high standards. The mountain-modern interiors of the Hotel Jerome were most recently reimagined in 2012 by celebrated designer Todd-Avery Lenahan.
  • Rooms here aren’t just stylish — starting at 525 square feet, they’re some of the largest in Aspen.
  • A newly redesigned pool and dining terrace provides more room and easier access to the courtyard. You could laze your days away here in the two hot tubs and cozy cabanas, or even opt for a pool-side room.
  • A small but beautiful spa can be found in the hotel’s basement, providing botanically themed treatments and post-ski massages.

Things to Know

  • As one of the most popular luxury stays in Aspen, the 101-room Hotel Jerome is often fully booked for holidays such as Christmas, New Year’s and Fourth of July.
  • To avoid the crowds, plan your stay during Aspen’s off seasons (fall and spring).
  • The lights in the hotel’s hallways are perpetually dimmed to give it the effect of the mining era in which the property was built. People with sight problems may find this problematic, while others find it a charming addition to the Victorian ambiance.

The Rooms

  • Accommodations feature cashmere curtains, burnished-leather bed frames and nods to the hotel’s Western history, such as exclusive archival photos of the indigenous Ute Indians who once used Aspen as a summer hunting ground.
  • Floor-to-ceiling windows allow natural light to fill the rooms and afford great views of the surrounding Elk Mountain Range in every season.
  • Two new three-bedroom residences were recently built in the adjacent building — a structure once occupied by The Aspen Times. These brand-new residences have access to all hotel amenities in a private, residential-style space.

The Restaurants

  • The J-Bar saloon offers a small, but flavorful pub-style menu. Catch a game on one of the four TV screens or simply belly up to the original Chippendale chinoiserie bar that has served miners, hippies, skiers and celebrities for nearly 130 years.
  • Prospect Restaurant is the hotel’s signature dining venue open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Helmed by executive chef Rob Zack, the eatery’s dinner menu favorites include grilled bison tenderloin and citrus-cured duck confit.
  • Bad Harriet is Hotel Jerome’s new subterranean cocktail lounge named after Jerome B. Wheeler’s society wife, Harriet. Sip on creative cocktails and nibble on gourmet bar bites, all named after some of history’s most famous leading ladies.
