Auckland

One of every three New Zealanders lives in Auckland, a sprawling metropolis known for its waterfront, sports history and mix of British, Asian, and Polynesian cultures. It's in many ways New Zealand's most modern city, with its skyscrapers, modern business centers and downtown packed with trendy clubs and art galleries. But it's also built on top of dormant volcanoes, has enormous islands just a short ferry ride away, and is a quick drive or hike from green mountains. While the city is a great jumping-off point for trips around the North Island, make sure to spend some time taking advantage of Auckland itself.
