Sundance Mountain Resort

Utah's peaceful mountain retreat
VERIFIED LUXURY
There aren’t many places where you can truly get away from it all, but Utah’s Sundance Mountain Resort is one of those places. Situated on 5,000 acres of wilderness at the foot of the 12,000-foot Mount Timpanogos in the Wasatch Mountains, Sundance began as (and continues to be) a place set apart.

Purchased by Robert Redford in 1969 to conserve the stunning alpine landscape, the resort village and its rustic cabins seamlessly blend with pine trees so that lofty mountain views are the focal point anytime you step — or look — outside.

Yet even with one hiking boot firmly planted in nature, the Forbes Travel Guide Soon To Be Rated hotel also has a refined side, especially when it comes to the fine dining at the nationally renowned restaurant The Tree Room, the luxurious treatments at Spa at Sundance and the 144-seat, onsite screening room.

Our Inspector's Highlights
  • Nestled at the base of Mount Timpanogos, the second-highest peak in Utah’s Wasatch Range, and spread across 5,000 wilderness miles, Sundance feels like a true escape from the every day.
  • There are no busy roadways, soaring skyscrapers or sprawling retail outlets to disrupt your view. Instead, there are hiking paths, pine trees and art studios.
  • The focus on preservation is apparent in details throughout the resort, such as the bar soap in the rooms that is handmade onsite and the chargers at the restaurants made from recycled glass and hand-blown at Sundance by artists in residence.
  • Wood-planked walls and floors, woolen blankets, stone-clad fireplaces and exposed beams give spaces around the property a comfortable mountain lodge feel.
  • Take advantage of Sundance's creative vibe with a class at the resort's onsite art studio. Craft your own leather journal or learn to make souvenirs like soap, candles and jewelry to impress your friends long after you've returned home.
Things to Know
  • The resort was where the Sundance Film Institute began (the nonprofit group later created the Sundance Film Festival, and the hotel remains a venue for the noted event).
  • Everyone knows about the top-notch skiing and snowboarding, but don't discount summertime. When the ski crowds are gone, the air is no longer brisk and the sun shines brightly around the 12,000-foot Mount Timpanogos.
  • It’s easy to spend a day on the mountain hiking, biking or riding a ski lift to the summit, where clear skies lend a 360-degree view from the Uinta Mountains to Utah Lake.
  • Other warm-weather activities around the Forbes Travel Guide Soon To Be Rated hotel's resort village include blue-ribbon trout fly-fishing, horseback riding, river rafting and golfing.
The Rooms
  • A standard room at Sundance isn’t your typical lodging set-up. The Forbes Travel Guide Soon To Be Rated hotel’s private quarters are comprised of a cluster of mountainside cabins, outfitted with stone fireplaces, wood-paneled walls, soaking tubs and Native American art that exude a warm yet luxurious vibe.
  • Standards and studios sleep up to two guests, with larger Sundance suites and apartment-style mountain suites permitting up to four guests.
  • For larger groups, mountain lofts have a ladder-access sleeping area and private master bedroom that allow up to six guests to rest comfortably.
  • But for a true home-away-from-home experience, book one of four luxury mountain homes, with two to seven bedrooms.
The Restaurants
  • The Tree Room is the candlelit fine dining experience at the Forbes Travel Guide Soon To Be Rated hotel, open for dinner daily during the busy winter months, and open Tuesday through Saturday during the off season.
  • The restaurant serves fresh, seasonal fare with a nod to Sundance’s Rocky Mountain setting, which is quite obvious with items such as bison and steelhead trout.
  • For casual dining, visit the Foundry Grill, named after the large foundry wall decorated with artifacts from Utah’s frontier farming, mining and settling heritage.
  • Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner year-round, the Foundry Grill serves comforting American favorites, such as the Foundry Grill beef burger and spicy chicken breast.
  • The restaurant is also legendary for its gourmet Sunday brunch, which includes carved meats, made-to-order omelettes and a dessert buffet.
